Gun rights activists spent record amounts last year to elect Republicans but arent likely to get their biggest wish, nationwide concealed carry legislation, approved before the 2018 elections.
Activists are blaming the Republicans they help put in power as well as Democrats for the lack of action on the gun lobbys number one legislative priority.
The gun rights community does not appreciate the fact that reciprocity languished for so long, and then following two tragic shootings, it seems the first initial response from some in the GOP was, We need additional gun control, aka the NICS fix, said Erich Pratt, executive director of the gun rights group Gun Owners of America.
That measure aimed at fixing the National Instant Criminal Background Check System gets support from members of both parties, and comes as the broken system failed to stop the shooter from purchasing the gun used in the Texas church massacre last month.
The House passed the background fix, tied to concealed carry reciprocity, which gun rights advocates have been pushing for years, and finally became a possibility when Republicans won control of the White House, House and Senate last year.
The Senate wants to take up the fix separately from concealed carry, causing some in the gun rights community to say GOP leaders are prioritizing a gun control measure over gun rights. Others fear theyre giving away a potential incentive they could use to get Democrats on board for concealed carry measure next year.

My conclusion? This is stupid and we are being played. Reading between the lines, and even directly. Gun Owners of America would rather get nothing than get national reciprocity. Cornyn and Republicans in the senate want to clean up background checks. They are playing everyone about national reciprocity, which they use for fundraising and, like Obamacare repeal, don't want to enact. Shame on them.
Keep the two together, pass them as the house wrote now! Why? Either way we get a fixed background check as because both parties want it. Not so with national reciprocity, so keep it attached so it doesn't get lost along the way.
Oops! I think you posted to the wrong thread. It is Saturday morning...
I sure did.
Thanks for the mention.
Sorry about that folks...
I asked to have it removed.
>>We think in GOP/DNC terms.
I can’t believe that people still think like that. But they do. Even here on FR.
Every article posted about the GOP should include a disclaimer that the actual party is more aligned with the Democrats than with the working American (which includes people who work for a paycheck as well as people who own a sole proprietorship).
Gun rights for the hoi polloi make great fund-raising fodder, but once they get to DC, the thought of all those armed rabble out there in flyover land is just terrifying.
You know,... at first I was inclined to agree with you.
What caused me to post that, is the idea we have a majority in Congress.
For that reason, I addressed what I did.
We lament not getting what we want because of the Republican majority, when it comes to gun rights.
We are falling for the old R vs D group think.
Hey, I do it too. I’ve made countless posts about us having the majority. We clearly don’t. Otherwise things would be getting done.
I’m sure you agree with this, so don’t think I’m taking you to task.
Bryanw92, I’d like to say I don’t fall for this, and when I intellectualize on the topic, I do pretty good.
Unfortunately I still do make comments about us having the majority. That’s flawed logic.
I’ll have to admit to it.
Our challenge is that the members of this club say one thing to get elected (Clinton's "public answer"), wave issues out there to raise money (Cornyn's shameless support for national reciprocity), yet drop all pretenses once they are in the well of the Senate. They have zero interest in delivering this to the masses as it doesn't affect them. Like Obamacare, doesn't matter to them. They get special handling, exceptions. In case of national reciprocity, they have own security, will give themselves dispensations.
We should also add how big they talked for eight years under Obama. Why they had big incredible plans...
Where are those plans now?
Even this tax bill is flawed.
One thing that really gets me is the household mortgage interest deduction.
IMO, that’s an attack on the homed, the family...
What are these idiots thinking?
And then the middle-class portion of this tax-cut sunsets in four or five years.
Read later.
