Southwest Airlines says it all started with a cigarette.

A passenger was smoking in the bathroom somewhere between Portland and Sacramento on Saturday, according to the airline, and had gone so far as to tamper with the smoke detector.

Portland to Sacramento is a one hour flight. If you can't make it for one hour without a cigarette you've got big problems.

That used to be a 1 hr flight. But anymore you have to check in 1-2 hours early and once you get past security you can’t go back out without a load of hassle so that one hr flight has turned into at least 2 but usually longer. And if the plane is late or slow boarding you can add more time.
The time is why I hate flying now. I remember when you could check in 15 minutes before boarding and just get on the plane.
