I think this was more a container failure than an explosive failure.

If the ends of the pipe had been properly secured they would not have failed and the gasses created by the matches and sugar may have reached higher pressures and actually ruptured and fragmented the pipe.

Not having access to the actual device my statement is only a WAG.

the proper way to make a pipe bomb is NOT to screw end caps onto a threaded pipe, but to screw couples to the threaded pipe ends and then screw plugs into the couples, otherwise the cheaply made end caps are so weak they just blow out.

don’t they teach ANYTHING worthwhile in junior high school anymore?

(handy tip: don’t buy all of the parts for a pipe bomb from the same hardware store, but instead, buy one or two parts from several different hardware stores, along with some other innocent stuff like condoms or Playboy magazines ...)
