The so-called Thomas Fire is only 15 percent contained, now threatening the city of Santa Barbara and the nearby coastal town of Carpinteria, and is on track to become one of the worst wildfires in California history.
It has already destroyed 583 structures and scorched 173,000 acres, the authorities say. New evacuations were ordered in Carpinteria, which been under fire threat for days.
The new evacuation zone extends within two miles of the Santa Barbara Zoo.

What a hateful thing to say. I disagree. I have family all over California but I don’t wish death or distruction on anyone.
Makes Sense.
How do they not have wild fires?
I dont say it, I live here! Im saying what others have posted. I hope you understand that.
That is true as well. The big difference in comparing the two areas is that in this case in coastal California, the arid winds are high speed and coming off a much higher area causing warming and related drying.
The Zoo could also be in the line of fire!

Now tallying 21 counties among their ranks, supporters of the movement to carve an independent State of Jefferson out of Northern California plan to introduce a bill this session seeking sovereignty.
Organizers on Wednesday turned in declarations for 15 counties, including Sutter, Placer, Nevada and El Dorado, asking the state to grant them permission to separate. Six others petitions which were either passed by the county boards of supervisors or reflect signature-gathering drives have already been filed.
Jefferson proponents contend that their rural areas lack adequate representation in state government, which has led to over-regulation and environmental policies that decimated their regional economies, particularly the logging and mining industries that historically supported them. Their seal bears an XX, signifying that they have been double-crossed by state government.
1. The Santa Ana winds do not merely blow westerly. Their direction depends on where you are relative to the high desert area. Yes, if you are more coastal above the L.A. basin, they come mostly from east of there. But if you are out in the “Inland Empire” or even some places between there and the coast, the Santa Ana winds come down from the north through available mountain passes (like the huge Cajon Pass north of San Bernardino. (I know, I grew up there.)
2. O.K., Santa Barbara might not be a desert, but it is dry more of the year than Greece or Italy, both of which have annual average precip much greater than Santa Barbara, as is true for a good amount of the coast of SOUTHERN California; which I have always heard referred to as semi-arid in climate.
Carp, Summerland and Montecito is VERY expensive real estate.
I don't. I'm perfectly fine here in cozy Northern WI.
CA is adjacent to the world's largest body of water. Why aren't they utilizing it?
Carlsbad opened a deal plant this year. I think that’s it. Jerry brown spends 20 billion a year on illegal aliens, none of it water.
desal
evac zone is nearly to Milpass
winds going to pick up again around 4 am.
Above Riveria, havent had a fire since 1932.
pray
“but we are lumped in with the left to share in the FR hatred of all things New England”
Again more hyperbole and too little truth.
“All things New England”??
On one political point alone you are wrong. Are Maine and New Hampshire part of New England? Yes. Are their governors Republican? Yes. Maybe Massachusetts folk don’t consider Maine and New Hampshire part of New England?
And more importantly tons of Freepers ONLY displeasure with places like Massachusetts, Connecticut, Vermont and sometimes Rhode Island is not those places as the places the contain but yes always the politics that tends to run them. While that may not be YOUR fault, try as you might, I think you error, greatly, in saying most Freepers hate “ALL things New England.”
When will the winds finally let up? I pray they do and soon!
Moonbeam just blamed President Trump for the fires.
Southern CA is not a desert? Turn off the water supply for 1 year and I can assure you, you will see a desert landscape.
Nearly everything growing in S. CA was planted by people and if the water is turned off, most if it dies off very quickly.
A desert is defined as having sandy or rocky soil with little or no vegetation. Water lost to evaporation and transpiration in a desert exceeds the amount of precipitation; most deserts average less than 9.75 inches of precipitation per year.
Los Angeles averages about 15 inches of rainfall per year. Lima, Peru averages .2, Madrid slightly more than LA at 17 inches, Palermo in Sicily about 24.
Oh no. Prayers up. Have relatives in SB.
Thats simply not true. Most of this area is covered with natural chaparral. That wasnt planted by anyone.
You’re not calling God an arsonist, are you?
There are a lot of decent, devout Christians being harmed by these fires.
