Democratic councilwoman says the safety measure relied on in low-income neighborhoods hurts shoppers' feelings.

Philadelphia is one step closer to getting rid of bulletproof glass in many of its small businesses as part of a larger effort to crack down on loitering, public urination and potential drug sales -- but it's triggered backlash from the shopkeepers.

It’s actually a retail term. We had cases of product go out the back door. The manager got a special performance bonus that wasn’t tied to performance. It was tied to community organizing.

I don’t see how this law could hold up in court.

How in the world does getting rid of bullet proof glass at a business stop public urination by bums???

What drugs are these politicians using??

What about banks? Will these businesses close down?

I don’t see how you can remove safety for employees & then tell a business to stay open without any protection.

Why not just put a “free sh*t” section in each store, stocked with cash, Newports, and scratch-offs..

From an earlier story, these are seedy convience stores that sell mostly booze and cigs, and they are operating fraudulently as “restaurants” in order to skirt licensing guidelines. They are simply saying if you are really a restaurant, take down the plexiglass and actually serve food.

This is a typical feral-based move by feral politicians pandering to their thug voters.

When the shops all move out, the idiots will complain about “food deserts” and have food shipped in courtesy of taxpayers. IMO, the plan all along.

Once deserted, a large chain will open the only store in the area and charge everyone 50% more to account for theft. Once again screwing everyone that doesn’t steal...

I am pretty sure it is an accounting term. It covers outright theft & also bad checks and outdated produce.

If they are operating fraudulently as restaurants then address what is a restaurant and possibly pull liquor licenses. But the city ought not tell business owners what they can and can’t do to reasonably protect their employees and goods. How many of these city officials are willing to forego their own security measures when they visit certain parts of town?

They should get rid of the cashier and just have folks use the honor system in buying booze. Safer, and since most people are really honest, and good people, nothing could possibly go wrong.

Oh, I know it’s a retail term. But those community organizing efforts that went out the back door before they hit the shelves are still theft. Doesn’t matter who does it.

Shrinkage occurs in many ways.......

I understand the term.

Theft is theft is theft.

The word just looks prettier on the store/board reports.

I went to college and lived in the south side of Chicago for three years. Bullet proff glass was a basic feature of places on the edge of Hyde Park on 53rd Street, and pretty much a necessity on Cottage Grove. The first casualty? Extended hours. Some of those places (e.g. Harold’s Chicken Shack on 53rd and Kenwood) weren’t so bad during the day. I can see places like that closing at 8PM instead of midnight.

Some places that rely on late night business (convenience stores, sandwich shops) may just close down altogether.
