So why did Flynn lie?

Much has been made of why Special Counsel Robert Mueller prosecuted former national security adviser Michael Flynn, who lied to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.  But what about the lie itself, which President Trump has noted on Twitter was a pretty useless lie?

I had to fire General Flynn because he lied to the Vice President and the FBI. He has pled guilty to those lies. It is a shame because his actions during the transition were lawful. There was nothing to hide!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) December 2, 2017

The conventional wisdom, as UCLA law professor Harry Litman lays out, is that Flynn "knew" that talking with the Russians, or rather, "negotiating" with them, as he extends the term, was "wrong and inimical to U.S. interests."  I notice he doesn't use the word "illegal," and from a law professor, that's significant.  Just "wrong."

As Jack Posobiec has found, it was actually all right.

I think Flynn lied because he was afraid.  And he was afraid because he's a Washington swamp creature, even if a Trump-friendly one.

In the Washington swamp culture, nothing is worse than talking to a Russian.

Russia is our worst enemy, supposedly, and great amounts of spydom and security clearances hinge on keeping Russia as big an enemy as possible.  More enemy, more government funds for the bureaucracies that hunt Russian spies.  And more specifically, talk to a Russian, lose your security clearance.

There’s a report out that Comey testified behind closed doors to Congress that he and his investigators didn’t think that Flynn was lying. They thought that it was just bad memory or something similar. Mueller is the one that felt it was a charge, only. The bigger question is why did Flynn agree to it, and not fight it.

Maybe he didn't lie. Maybe he didn't want to be harassed by the Dems for the next 10 years like Oliver North.

Spent so much time as a Democrat he thought it was mandatory to lie even when the truth would serve things better.....

Think about stepping back from the precipice. Rush blows with the wind. You are spouting fake news in caps. POTUS has this & Feinstein is one step ahead of her own scandals.

“You cannot charge a president with obstruction of justice for exercising his constitutional power to fire Comey and his constitutional authority to tell the Justice Department who to investigate, who not to investigate,” Dershowitz said Monday on Fox & Friends.

Are Flynn’s network of spooks taking down corruption in the DOJ and FBI? Much credit to @Thomaswictor for his brilliant work. This is an analysis of what he proposes - which lines up nicely with what we discovered with our own work.

The FBI used to use hand written reports to record interviews after the fact and trick you to sign them...they would purposefully put in language that could mean you lied to the FBI agents...you then were forced to cooperate or face jail time.

The FBI can lie to you no end; if you slip up in any answer to them you are guilty and punishable. No intent to lie needed.

I can see almost no reason to ever talk to an Agent without a lawyer present and recording the session which usually means they cancel the interview.

I mean, it is not like the FBI has a record of integrity and honesty. Remember the vaunted FBI Crime Lab?

Why is it a crime to lie to the FBI in there first place?

Answer: Because they can “get” you for making a mistake or recalling things incorrectly. Most of their prosecutions would fall apart otherwise.

>> How does the FBI know he lied ? <<

Probably because our agencies try to monitor every conversation and communication by the Russian ambassador. It would seem to be nothing more than run-of-the-mill intelligence collection.

He lied... because this is one big swerve.

With Flynn’s allocution statement on Friday, that clearly states that no treason occurred and made with Mueller’s consent, the Trump/Russia Investigation is officially over.

Now... per the terms of Flynn’s plea deal, he is legally obligated to turn over anything he knows about any illegal activity.

Flynn has also been released from any NDAs... including those from his time working for Obama at DIA. Uranium One, ISIS... you name it... in that role, Flynn would have the information to implicate Obama and Hillary.

thanks.
I've got my answer how the FBI knew Flynn lied.
Kislyak was being wiretapped.
How does Flynn not know Kislyak wouldn't be recorded ?

I've dug some more and it’ still spinning.

There appears to be no question that Flynn's conversations with Kislyak were recorded, but nothing official.

Sally Yates refused to even acknowledge one way or another the existence of the wiretaps in her testimony before congress.
yet she supposedly gave the WH copies of the transcript before Flynn resigned.

Why did the FBI all of a sudden decide to charge Flynn with lying ? 10 months later ? and he agrees to a plea deal ?
Couple of things make sense. 1. save his son 2. save the Presidentcy.

I would love to know the details of how Flynn got to his plea deal.

Flynn had already resigned. Nobody was reporting that Flynn lied. Here's NPR reporting 02/15/2017 -and it's eye opening if it can believed.

A lawyer from Judicial Watch was on Lou Dobbs last week. He said if he was FBI and questioned you for 4 hours he’d have no problem coming up with a lying charge.

Just because Flynn pled guilty to “lying” doesn’t mean he did. Word is his will and finances were broken. He took a deal because he couldn’t go on.

I’ve also heard that he didn’t think he lied to Pence. That he told the VP whatever he knew based on incomplete info. The story that “Flynn lied to Pence” was always scant on details in my opinion.

I read an article on pardon’s and Trump. The FBI holds back certain charges on someone, let’s say they only bring one charge against them and decide not to charge them with the others; then hoping Trump will pardon them, FBI then brings forth the other charges. Voila. It’s all part of plot and scheme to bring down Trump and his people.

Do you know why? He is a 35 year military man, I give him the benefit of the doubt until everything comes out. The same with Roy Moore.

This country has always believed in innocence until proven guilty. Suddenly we have a bunch of keyboard jockeys becoming judge, jury and executioner. We complain about the liberals turning our beloved country into a banana republic when some of us are doing the same thing.

You have no idea what happened or why Flynn did what he did. I’m betting he knew more than anyone how corrupt the FBI was. There is a lot more to this stew than there appears on the surface. Stop smearing an honorable man who spent his career defending our nation.
