The immigration concession won by departing Arizona Sen. Jeff Flake in exchange for his vote on the tax bill is both a taken prize and warning flag for what promises to be a brutal and high-stakes debate over amnesty, corporate subsidies, and immigration reforms.
The fight may begin in earnest next week because Texas Sen. John Cornyn hinted Thursday that a group of GOP Senators will soon release their wide-ranging amnesty proposal. The proposal has already been rejected by the second-ranking Senate Democrat, Sen. Richard Durbin.
Flake is a strong advocate for amnesty, and he was a member of the 2013 Gang of Eight group. His support for amnesty has proved so unpopular that his polls fell through the floor, and he announced he would not run for election in 2018.
On Friday, Flake told reporters that he traded his budget vote for a leadership promise on amnesty, setting off a furious round of media back-and-and-forth over the implications of the promise. The New York Times reported:
Leaders agreed to work on providing fair and permanent protections for the beneficiaries of an Obama-era effort that protects young undocumented immigrants from deportation, known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, Mr. Flake said.

Twelve idiots on a San Fransisco jury, an arrogant, politicized SF public defender and an incompetent or equally politically motivated SF prosecutor, have killed DACA.
Thanks, San Francisco!
(Sorry, Jeff. [Not really.])
HELL NO!
Trading the future of our country for a temporary tax cut is a bad deal for all Americans. Flake can’t exit fast enough.
They are desperate to get the final amnesty cementing the Bush Plan for North Mexico (aka USA) into place before we throw their paid weasels out of office.
Amnesty for some will become amnesty for all.
NO ONE in Arizona - the State that passed SB1070 - has any interest in amnesty for the illegals except the Mexicans themselves and the hierarchy of the Mormon Church...which is who Flake works for.
Like McCain, Flake does NOT represent Arizona’s electorate. He NEVER spoke of this in the past and now that he has been outed, he knows he has to leave.
He should deport himself to Mexico since it’s the country he wants to live in.
You think that trial decision is gonna change our Congress mind?! Lol
I don’t think so. To me the question on SF is whether a city or state really has the authority to be able to reject federal law (on immigration, in this case).
While I think the laws should be debated and changed to make immigration more beneficial to the US, what we have is what we have, even if it’s pretty minimal.
But does a locality have the right to reject it?
This is the case that should be filed. Unless a decision is made on this issue, you can pass any immigration law you want and certain places won’t enforce it and will get a pass on their rebellion.
We were going to get the debate anyway - this is just Flake’s way of staying on the good side of the Republican Establishment, so that he can get a juicy lobbying job after he leaves the Senate next year.
The key thing is that there hasn’t been any specific promises beyond the debate.
Poor Flakey Flake. The Fates just don’t seem to give a flying f*** what he or the Morman Church wants.
Flake is like Obama. He wants to cause as much damage to our country as he can before he leaves office. There is a special place in HELL for both of them.
In fact, aren't you leaving us??
Perhaps the Trump Administration needs to put ICE checkpoints on every road in and out of “sanctuary” cities and in front of every one of their government buildings, particularly the welfare offices.
It looks like the promise is...that he will be a member of the committee.
Chain migration and not having a wall is killing us, literally.
It is all about having a two-class society. The welfare class (let’s import illiterate peasants) and the ruling class. They will sell this country out - that is what they have been doing.
“NO ONE in Arizona - the State that passed SB1070 - has any interest in amnesty for the illegals except the Mexicans themselves and the hierarchy of the Mormon Church...which is who Flake works for.”
Yes, and the Mormons kinda look the other way with the one of their Articles of Faith that says that they are subject to the laws of the lands where they live. But to be fair, they are really no worse than the Catholics who also ignore our laws and help to bring thousands of Mexicans into this country illegally.
Renege.
It’s not like he himself hasn’t done so to the party and its principles.
Sucks to be you, Flake, but turnabout is fair play.
