WELLINGTON New Zealands overseas investment regulator said Thursday it was discussing allegations made against former US Today show host Matt Lauer with his representative as part of a review of his purchase of a large South Island farm.
NBC News fired Lauer on Wednesday after a female colleague accused him of inappropriate sexual behavior, the network said, making him the latest rich and powerful man to be felled by such accusations.
New Zealands Overseas Investment Office cited the requirement that foreign investors be of good character as it confirmed it was seeking further information on Lauer.
The Overseas Investment Office is aware that allegations have been made in relation to Matt Lauer and that he is no longer working for NBC News in the USA, Lisa Barrett, deputy chief executive of policy and overseas investment, said in an emailed statement. We are discussing this with his representative and are seeking further information.
A condition of the consent granted to Orange Lakes Ltd. to purchase the lease for Hunter Valley Station is that the individuals with control of that company must continue to be of good character, Barrett added, referring to the holding company owned by Lauer and his wife.
The investment office approved the purchase of an 11,000-hectare (42-square-mile) sheep and cattle farm in New Zealands picturesque South Island by Lauer and his wife in February.

Too bad the U.S. doesn’t have such stipulations. George Soros could not have bought his U.S. citizenship.
Several odd things into this ‘ranch’ episode.
First, Lauer and the wife just aren’t much of a couple, and I really doubt that she had any intention of ever moving there. This makes me think that Matt had some new New Zealand gal as a potential new wife.
Second, this ranch....if you go and look at the location....is way out in the middle of nowhere. Ten miles to a gas station, and maybe 25 miles to a grocery. Just leaving the main road to reach the ranch house....it’s maybe six miles on a dirt road.
If he does get disapproved, it’ll be interesting if he loses his down-payment on the deal or if they shovel his money back at him. The thing is...if you disapprove Matt...there’s probably ten Chinese guys ready to step in and buy the same property.
Rush talked about this. I wonder what kind of property rights exist in New Zealand. Can they just seize the property, or only with just compensation.

Most likely scenario is Lauer just wanted a quiet place to take his NYC “gal pals”.
At least the cows and sheep will be safe from him.>>> complete speculation on your part.
42 square miles? That’s the size of most cities.
Look at this, Hitlery lecturing our youth about equality. How about equality under the law?

Makes no sense. People concerned about foreigners owning their land so they elect left-wingers??? Stupid!!!
Maybe they meant they dropped from having total control in the past to having to be in a coalition.
I think this is fairly common to UK Commonwealth nations. We at one time looked into moving to the British Virgin Islands for retirement. (They are one of the most beautiful and friendly places on earth.) But we came up against the same roadblocks. You have to be a “Belonger”, a citizen of the UK to even be considered. They are very strict. Too bad Mother Country England didn’t follow her own rules.

Apparently, New Zealand is the “perfect bolt hole.”
I’ve been reading about the phenomenon for a few years now. What do the ultra wealthy know that they aren’t sharing with the rest of us?
I think this is a good idea.
Just think about the Muslims in this country building their terrorist training camps out in the middle of nowhere.
Our states should be able to seize the property and deny them the right to purchase property in the future.
But, then I personally think that Islam should be declared a non-religion and be forbidden in the country.
Islam is a dangerous virus that should be eradicated.
I wonder if the wife even knew of the farm?
NZ is leftist.
Ergo, Lauer will get a pass.
That would be just terrible.
Look for his wife to speedily divorce him and grab this among other assets.
Or at least the half his soon to be ex-wife doesn’t own.
