White House develops plan to replace Rex Tillerson with CIA Director Mike Pompeo: Report

The White House has mapped out a plan in which Secretary of State Rex Tillerson is replaced in the next few weeks with current CIA Director Mike Pompeo, according to a report.

Senior administration officials told the New York Times Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., would then take over for Pompeo as director of the CIA.

Cotton has indicated he would take the post if President Trump offered it to him, the officials said. However, it’s unknown whether the president has approved the transition plan. A spokesperson for Cotton said the senator’s “focus is on serving Arkansans in the Senate.”

The plan to oust Tillerson and transition Pompeo into the role of the nation’s top diplomat was developed by White House chief of staff John Kelly, who has floated the proposal with other administration officials. The change in the makeup of the national security team would take place toward the end of the year or not long after, according to the New York Times.

Tillerson’s relationship with Trump has been strained, and the two have sparred over different foreign policy issues, such as the Iran nuclear deal and North Korea.

The secretary of state and former CEO of Exxon Mobile reportedly called the president a “moron” during a meeting at the Pentagon over the summer, and considered resigning, adding to speculation surrounding his tenure in the Trump administration. But in an impromptu news conference in October, Tillerson attempted to quiet rumors about his future, saying he had no plans to resign as secretary of state. He also denied allegations he made the derogatory remark about Trump.

Should Tillerson leave the State Department by the end of the year, his time as secretary of state would be the shortest of any predecessor

“I remember when ... most every one here seemed to think Tillerson was the cat’s meow of DJT’s appointees. “

Sometimes people don’t turn out to be who you thought they were. I just wish that President Trump would apply that same logic to Sessions.

>>>I wonder why this admin hasn’t a place for Bolton

Different philosophies. Trump is America First and Bolton has never seen a country he hasn’t wanted to invade and establish a new government.

I’m not impressed with Mr. Pro-Gay, bert.

Maybe you like gay stuff, but I don’t.

Varney said WH did not confirm this, but said only that Tillerson is busy at work.

Tillerson cancelled a planned speech and is at the White House.

"I'd rather have Cotton in the Senate"

I'd rather have Cotton at CIA, and he works for me.

Is he nuts? We can’t afford to lose any more from the Senate. Pompeo is a former intelligence officer and is in the right place - leave him right where he is. Find someone else to replace Tillerson BUT NOT FROM THE SENATE or even the House! Nothing wrong with Cotton but he’s needed in the Senate.

Who do you reckon would be his interim replacement?

“”Why set up two Senate confirmations? Slip Amb Bolton into State, and let the big dawg eat.””

Well, that will get you a big bite from a lot of FReepers but I agree with you. The position is made for Bolton but I guess there’s bad blood between Trump and Bolton for some reason. That’s according to the gossip/rumor mill!

I’m not sure, but I do somewhat trust Asa Hutchinson to make an informed decision.

He could do worse than Jeremy Gillam, Speaker of the Arkansas House.

That may be a great article but the CIA doesn’t have a role in immigration. Leave Cotton where he is!!! Stop messing around with the number of GOP seats in the Senate. GADS - who’s making these decisions?

Sources?

I have only heard Amb Bolton consistently underscore the sovereignty of the United States. I have never heard him being a one world order proponent.

“”Read the piece I posted above for an example of Senator Cotton’s thinking””

Which would be useless to him and the country at the CIA! Immigration is not their bailiwick.

He put out a statement remembering the plight of the trannies. That means State has one employee too many.
He fagged up the BSA. And it wasn’t something he had no control over.
He lobbied for it and fought hard for it with the board of directors.

When a man fights that hard for it... it makes me wonder why.

This plan would cost us another R Senator....NOT a good idea !!!

Use Bolton if necessary-—but do NOT remove an R senator!

I’ve been a Bolton fan since Dubya. Get this dude to State and he’ll completely drain that part of the Swamp, I guarantee.

DECIMATING the “core competency” of the State Department, leaving U.S. reputation in “tatters”.

My "friends" here in the swamp just recited for me the reasons why it is imperative to impeach Trump. What you just wrote is part of the indictment.

But, you left off the part about tearing up decades, nay centuries, of carefully crafted foreign policy and driving a wedge between ourselves and our allies, and backing NK into a corner where they will be forced to go to nuclear war with us after decades of careful diplomacy had them backed into a corner.

And yes, they read the Compost in on the train to work every morning.
