It's an anniversary of sorts -- and should be something of a national holiday.
Twenty years ago, Jim Robinson became FReeper #1 on this website, and we all are much the better for it.
I found FreeRepublic.com via my news aggregator at the time, The Drudge Report. Quickly I lost interest in that site in favor of this my new home page.
I found that Freerepublic is just not a news aggregator, but an intelligence aggregator. Thanks to the overwhelming diversity of interests amongst the FReeper community, we can go from the smallest subatomic particles to the vastness of inter-gallactic space in only a few posts. And from pottery shards from the earliest human civilizations to the flying car concepts from the day after tomorrow.
Thought provoking discussions about history, religion and even cold fusion and train travel has intrigued us over the past twenty years.
And those are just some side benefits to one of the best sites anywhere for the sharing of conservative and patriotic ideas.
Thanks, Jim, for following through on the glimmer of your idea for this site. Happy Anniversary memories and hopes and prayers for many more anniversaries to come!
I’ve forgotten how to find my FReeper number.
Used to know it.
Coming up on 20 years in a couple of months.
I can’t even remember how I came across FR, but it was probably on the C-SPAN message boards. I think I lurked for about three seconds here before signing up and posting *something important*. It was either about the lardy Michael Moore or that fat Dixie Chick.
Someday I’m going to start a blog so I can pimp it here.
(Also—full confession, here—anytime you see the keywords “oopsicrappedmypants” or “iamwearingadiaper” I did it. You’re welcome. Hey, those were bits from the last of the decent SNL days!)
Thanks for the great post Oscar, and Happy Anniversary Jim #1 Robinson.
Great site, and so glad Lucy T tipped me off to this site back in 2001 when I was at Lucianne.
When Lucianne purged us rough-around-the-edges sorts I found myself full time lurking until my birthday 2004 when I finally joined to comment.
My wife, and I enjoy the daily experience of FRee Republic, and send a token of our appreciation in the form of a donation each quarter as we already did this quarter.
Let’s not forget, and a BIG shout-out to John Robinson for a bear of a job keeping the site up, and running. Great job!
One of my greatest memories is, and always will be, your and Bill the Drill’s chapter-by-chapter study of “Atlas Shrugged”
I never told you at the time, but to me it was brilliant. I never knew what I was missing in the 60’s. (I thought that my classmates were lugging such a big book around just to look impressive!)
Buy our book. (See my tagline.) Btd and I need the royalties.
Everybody minus at least one.
The Scotsman in me might reply something along the lines of “Why buy the cow when the milk was free!”
But bump to your tagline for those FReepers who want an excellent work of literary review.
I came in from Drudge one fine day in '98 and never left. Before this Internet came along a free individual's ability to communicate with the public was limited to soapbox tirades and letters to the editor that never saw the light of day. This broke that, and the media gatekeepers have been shrieking in dismay ever since. I remember a time when the NY Times was the "paper of record" simply because it said so. They're still trying to stuff this genie back into the bottle, but he, and we, we aren't going. Eagles up!
Thank you, Jim for establishing a forum for like minded people who are conservative.
When MrConfettiman posted, “I was there, where were you,” he had a picture of himself in front of the White House with a big sign, ‘Fire the Liar,’ and was protesting Clinton. He invited us to join him the following Sat but warned us that we didn’t have a permit. I went and have been involved ever since. The DC Chapter would post After Action Reports with pictures - Jim announced that he’d be here the weekend of Halloween. It was great - in less than 2 month’s notice, we had 5,000 patriots on the Mall on Sat!
One of my favorite posts was Kristinn’s report of FReeping Clinton at church!
And, of course, Dr Raoul’s posts and FReeps!
I am so grateful for all the work that Free Republic has done save and regain our freedom.
: )
I remember hesitating to sign up because an email address was required (due to the trolls, as I recall A+Bert? Ash?).
It was the dark days of the Clintons and their FBI files, and I wondered if FR would be secure if the Feds decided to shut Jim down.
Obviously I decided to stick with Jim.
In 1999 I penned a vanity that I titled "Bill Clinton is There". I googled that essay recently, when the left was beginning to spin the sex stories; it's on my FR Home page now.
I remember days when I'd go into work early (I worked in the media back then) to get a look at day's stories. I was able to recognize and chronicle the bias in AP stories, because I could post versions to FR throughout the day.
Some days the only posts on FR were mine and maybe one or two more. Lot's of vanity posts in those days too. I remember Arthur Wildfire! March had the same signup day as me. I could be wrong but I think I ran into him at a Clinton protest in Chicago that I happened upon one time...
Anyway, congrats and thanks, Jim!
FReeping since the WhitewaterBB days; logged in since Dec 3, 1997. Freeper #143 or thereabouts...
Love this site. It has been my daily elixir for almost 20 years! I don’t comment as much as I used to, but I am still here every day getting my news and having fun. Thanks JimRob!
