A hunter fatally shot a New York woman after sundown on Wednesday after apparently mistaking her for a deer, local officials said.
The hunter, identified as 34-year-old Thomas Jadlowski, was not charged in the shooting, though he violated state law by hunting after sunset when he killed Rosemary Billquist, 43, who was walking her dogs in a field near the Pennsylvania border around 5:30 p.m.
Jadlowski killed her with a pistol, the Chautauqua County sheriffs office said, according to The Guardian. He apparently claimed that he thought Billquist was a deer when he fired about 200 yards away, according to the New York Post. An investigation is ongoing.

I didn’t think Joe 6-Pack was either justifying the irresponsible behavior or saying it would hold up in court.
He was responding to the simple statement that a 200 yard pistol shot isn’t possible.
He said it was not only possible, but with the right pistol, quite possible. He did not specify weather/darkness etc, and even went out of his way to highlight the apparent irresponsibility.
Just my two cents, I don’t understand why the discussion degenerated the way it did.
I didn't see where it was a 44 Mag. Where was that written?
That sums up what happened here.
“Fired from a typical pistol, a 44 Magnum bullet drops around four feet in 200 yards. His story is bs.”
His story is bs? You make a ludicrious claim on .44 mag ballistics and expect us to take it as gospel?
No dice.
That sums up what happened here.
This was murder and it was not 200 yards and he was not hunting deer.
Pull the other one.
The guy was trying to murder her and did.
:) Metallic shooting, why gosh...no.
I bet you fifty bucks I could hit it though.
LOL
This seems to happen every year. I went to school in southwestern Pennsylvania. Wouldnt catch me in the woods this time of year. Woods full of trigger happy hunters a lot of them alcohol impaired. Sounded like a rolling artillery barrage.
________
Here's guessing there will be and should be charges. I understand it's illegal to be hunting after sunset in that area.
No matter ..... the shooter is an idiot.
This story has so many holes in it I cannot believe the narrative. SMH....
Yup, guy should be charged with several violations. Around here that is considered poaching. Can you legally take a deer there with a “pistol”?
One of the reasons I stopped hunting - too many idiots out there just itching to shoot something - some of things I’ve seen.....
The discussion degenerated because he, and you, chose to be hyper critical of a throw-away comment. I never intended to say that an accurate pistol shot at 200 yards is an impossibly under any circumstances. I was responding to the specific story being presented. Some people thrive on being pedantic.
It wasn’t. Read the thread. It’s filled with anecdotal reports of half-life crack shots with the 44 Magnum.
Feel free to refute my statement with ballistics data if you have any, but you don’t.
Or you could just do a simple web search on “44 Magnum bullet drop”. Others have already done the work.
Half-mile... Damn phone.
This shot was shockingly and criminally reckless. However, I can visualize how it might have happened without being complete BS.
The man has a real hunting pistol, like the Thompson G2 Contender in .223. It has a good pistol scope, and he has practiced at 100 yards and at 200 yards. He’s not much of a hunter, but he can hit a target at that range - as he proved.
He spots a deer at sunset and follows it.
As it starts to get dark, he sees a similar brown shape moving, perhaps a golden retriever or some other dog close to deer color at twilight.
He sights in on the movement, and in the scope he just sees that he’s on the leading edge of a large brown shape (possibly the woman in a leather coat?). Perhaps he’s even resting the pistol on a branch or a shooting stick for stability.
He pulls the trigger.
It stinks in terms of safety and in terms of good hunting. I don’t like following blood trails, and I would never shoot in that situation, but with a hit at waist height he probably figured he had a lung shot.
Ones target area is a lot smaller than the deers entire chest unless you intend to chase it through the woods in the dark before it collapses.
Pistols are legal is some states.
