U.S. Rep. Joe Barton, R-Ennis, released a statement on Wednesday apologizing for a graphic nude photo of him that circulated on social media earlier this week.
"While separated from my second wife, prior to the divorce, I had sexual relationships with other mature adult women," he said. "Each was consensual. Those relationships have ended. I am sorry I did not use better judgment during those days. I am sorry that I let my constituents down."
Barton, who announced his re-election bid earlier this month, is navigating in a political environment charged with emerging stories of sexual misbehavior in politics, in business, and in the media. The photo, which appeared on an anonymous Twitter account, set off speculation within Texas GOP circles about his political future.
In a phone interview with The Texas Tribune on Tuesday, Barton said he was deliberating that.

Yeah. Didn’t do anything wrong by (apparently) sending a naked pic to someone who wanted it.
But now there’s a naked pic of him on the internet.
This kind of stuff makes a member of Congress eminently blackmailable.
Barton was and is a security risk.
Anything sent over the web is hoovered by the NSA, as well as others.
May explain why he is favor of DACA legislation.
Chastity belts for men would be more cost effective.
“But who among us would want or expect our private fantasies to be broadcast for the world to judge?”
I suspect those of us that care about such things have never electronically transmitted digital photos of our genitals.
Well that’s twice I’ve agreed with you a hundred percent, so you should probably seek help or something! :)
The Kingdom Of Congress
I suspect that people in the throes of love or passion with someone they trust implicitly have made such a mistake.
Speaking of judgment, we need females coming forth against Rat federal judges!!!
Elect Ron Jeremy.
Now that was spot on!!
Nobody argues that. But you have side stepped the question of what the consequences the rest of us ought to impose on him is. That we are free to vote or not vote based on his behavior is indeed a given. But then, should we vote or not vote based on his behavior? If we are his boss, we may be free to decide to fire him or not over such a thing...but in this case which of the options is the right one to do?
The deeper problem is equivocating between God given rights and right and wrong. God bestows many rights to choose things on us, but that does not mean that every exercise of those rights is a morally good thing to do.
Now to consider what the consequences ought to be for him, I am happily not a voter who has to decide, but approach it as an intellectual exercise. Practice for times I have the duty to decide. And my opinion on the matter is that I need more information. Provided he was sending it to a woman who wanted it, and provided he was really estranged from his wife such that his marriage at the time was more legal fiction than a covenant that was in force...then I would say what he did was certainly sinful, but of the run of the mill kind that I do not think should have public consequences. The person I would take a low view of was somebody who betrayed him by sharing the photos he sent to them. However if he was just sending nasty pics of himself to women who he had not established a sexual relations with, than he was being a public nuisance and probably should be subject to public censure to one degree or another.
I don’t agree-they are running for office-not entering a monastery-or a convent, if female-they can do the full monte on social media if they want to they want to-but if they are smart and want to be re-elected, they might want to keep their sex lives off the internet-like other sensible, intelligent people do...
Excellent comment, thanks.
Excellent comment, thanks.
"hey, ya'll getting screwed anyway!"
Nah-I think logical problem solving is something sensible people can agree on.
LOL! Oh, ok. You musta forgot the sarc tag. A moron is the perfect malleable and manipulatable person to put in office.
“I suspect that people in the throes of love or passion with someone they trust implicitly have made such a mistake.”
And I suspect that people who voluntarily seek positions of power and influence over others ought to exercise a bit more discretion over whom they trust implicitly.
Stupid but not harassment. Too stupid to have an R. Go away and get some other job, Mr.
I agree with that completely.
