Complete Headline: Missing Argentine submarine 'is located by US Navy and a new sonar signal heard' as rescuers race to the spot with oxygen due to run out imminently

The missing Argentine submarine may have been located early this morning, after a US Navy aircraft allegedly detected a 'heat stain' from 230ft below the surface, some 185miles from the coast, and a rescue vessel separately reported hearing a sonar signal.

The ARA San Juan was sailing from Ushuaia to Mar del Plata when it disappeared with 44 crew members last Wednesday, including Argentina's first female submariner Eliana Krawczyk, 35, and Luis Niz, 25, who is due to get married in two weeks time.

The crew's oxygen supply was due to run out this morning as they only had enough on board to last seven days - leaving the international rescue mission racing against time to the spot where the signals were detected.

Everyone hates us. We help them anyway. That's grace.

That is an excellent point, and should always be our motivator.

That’s what I was thinking too. The ocean dpths 185 miles from the nearest coastline has to be at a minimum several thousand fet deep. Unless they’ve surfaced and have been missed by the spotter planes I think this won’t have a happy ending.

Yep. Sad.

It’s my understanding that they have a “hate America” day, it’s a national day off. I had a colleague over there during this day, when he asked about it they REALLY danced around the issue - eventually admitting it.

That said, of course we’d love to save these folks and improve the situation.

Even if we get them all out alive they will still hate our guts.

And what the Obama administration proved anew was that while most "hate" us, once America leaves or abandons the world stage as a super power (as under Obama) most of the world gets shaken awake and begs the US to retake their position of gracious leadership.

Every time I see pictures of that sub, it strikes me as looking like it has had a lot of bad body work done. Here’s that picture full size - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-5106689/Missing-Argentine-submarine-located-Navy.html

My sweetie is a Sub-Guy. Depending on how deep they are, the American subs are built to allow for people to escape & the guys are trained to do that. But 400 feet is about the max. The Kursk was at that level, but they had no means to get out.

Lots of things can go wrong on a sub. I sure hope these guys can be rescued.

Since the whole crew cannot be evacuated st once, I wonder if they would take air tanks with them to replenish the oxygen supply within the submarine as they bring personnel up to the surface.

Remember this is a news report. Details don't mean anything. I am guessing that they are on a line from where they departed to the sub base and are 185 miles from the base which would put them much closer to land. Still not good but not as inaccessible as reported. Hope for the best!

What it means is, the sub is on the continental shelf, which is quite broad where they were heading.

I don’t believe you need any power for an emergency blow. Now it’s possibLe that they tried that and the ballast air nozzles iced up like they theorize happened on the USS Thresher.

The DSRVs have been retired. They have an unmanned ROV with a docking ring and a rescue compartment for these situations.

Thresher had design problems that caused pipes to leak, then the blow nozzles plugged with ice, or so they theorize...............
