Students: Dartmouth professors created hostile environment

HANOVER, N.H. – Dartmouth College students say three psychology professors facing sexual misconduct allegations created a "hostile academic environment" marked by excessive drinking, favoritism and at times inappropriate behavior.

The attorney general's office began a criminal investigation last month after learning about allegations against psychology professors Todd Heatherton, Paul Whalen and Bill Kelley, all of whom have been put on paid leave and have had their access to campus restricted.

Authorities haven't released any details, but 15 undergraduate, graduate and postdoctoral students recently wrote to the school newspaper, The Dartmouth, alleging the three created a hostile environment "in which sexual harassment is normalized" and violated at least one campus policy related to sexual misconduct, sexual harassment or consensual relationships between students and faculty.

One woman said she felt like she was being tested at one event when a professor put his arm around her and slid it down her body.

Just how much do safe spaces cost at Dartmouth?

It probably happened at a “safe space”; no conservatives, no Christians, no pro-lifers.

I was a faculty adviser for a group on campus for 10 years and you really have to take a hands-off approach with everyone. You don’t touch them and you are never alone with a student.

Some coeds are very friendly because they were raised to be polite to older people but some men take that as flirting. You can’t think like that.

Thanks Libloather.
three psychology professors facing sexual misconduct allegations... excessive drinking, favoritism and at times inappropriate behavior.
Just be glad that excessive drinking and favoritism aren't inappropriate behavior! ;^)

Let's wait and see if the professors turn out to be part of The Resistance...

When different factions of the Left oppose each other, the problems are classicly hashed out in great Party meetings and the group that loses is thrust into outer darkness and becomes for a time a splinter group with a different assigned epithet such as the Lovestonites when they wre thrust out of the Party way back when and, of course, the Trotskyites which became a Bogeyman to the Left that did not fade until the breakup of the USSR. The current strife seems to be the same process occurring but the ascending group has not yet got sufficient influence int he Party to simply expel the Deviationists so the conflict becomes much more public and widespread throughout the Party. It appears at this point that the Clintonites are being expelled but they are fighting back and seem to have control of more resources so it will get messier and messier before it is done. It is not clear that the other faction, the Obamanites will prevail and define the resulting Party direction and structure. There may well be a third faction that is not yet distinct that is playing both ends against the middle.

Why is all this coming out now?

Could it be that the Information Age is going to bring TRUTH to the world after all?

Despite it's potential for propaganda?

Or is this mindless optimism?

Stay tuned.

I went to college not so long ago and every year one of the professors (engineering, originally from taiwan) held a party for students at his house. There was always drinking and many of the students were underage. He was never inappropriate and he did it for the students but even then I realized it was very risky for him to do it. He still teaches and nothing’s happened yet but it would pretty much ruin his life if something did since his life is at the college. Really have to be careful but many people are not.

You are correct. By the time I retired (2015) I never met any student one on one in my office. Even the simplest sarcasm or double entendre used in class had to be carefully considered because everything you might say was being recorded.

Trying to teach financial accounting without the frequent injection of humor was not fun. Over the years, a great job went downhill.

I don’t joke with students unless they are my son and his friends. Too many of them search diligently for ways to be offended.

I think my son lives to be offensive, which explains the lack of girls around him

I can understand firing them, but there is nothing in the excerpt that indicates a reason for a criminal investigation. [No, I did not read the whole article - that would violate an important FR tradition, and Thanksgiving is a time for embracing traditions.]

You are never alone with a student

Mygosh, that is something we learned in a Fundamentals of Teaching undergraduate course in 1965, before we were even okayed to go out and observe! In the interim, the 1970s happened, and all reasonable, common-sense rules disappeared. I'm surprised those rules didn't return with the scandal with priests who abused minors.

In my teaching career, a fellow teacher got in a bad situation. He had no qualms about being alone with students. Well, he put his arm around a student to console her when he wouldn't change a grade. She reported it as being much more.

Thing is, they were alone. You can't say with certainty that something that could've happened didn't happen, so he had no ironclad defense. The union had to settle, he had to be shipped elsewhere to teach, and we all got sensitivity training.

This explosion of accusations had to happen. The irony is ridiculous claims against Roy Moore from 40 years ago brought accusations to a feeding frenzy, so now everyone's guilty.

One reason I stopped substituting when I did over four years ago is the environment was getting toxic with everyone watching their own back losing all sense of community.

Had to get those thoughts out of my system. What a world...I wonder how it will be when nobody less than perfect is spared.
