A trio of labor economists suggest that effort at work is correlated with race
As The Economist writes, given the long history of making racial slurs about the efforts of some workers, any study casting black and Hispanic men as lazier than whites and Asians is sure to court controversy.
But, a provocative working paper by economists Daniel Hamermesh, Katie Genadek and Michael Burda sticks a tentative toe into these murky waters.
They suggest that Americas well-documented racial wage gap is overstated by 10% because minorities, especially men, spend larger portions of their workdays not actually working.
Uncomfortable though the topic may be, the authors have attempted a rigorous analysis.
The studys method is straightforward. The data come from nearly 36,000 daily diaries, self-reporting on how Americans spent their working hours, collected from 2003 to 2012.
Relying on the assumption that workers are equally honest in admitting sloth, the authors calculate the fraction of time spent not working while on the job spent relaxing or eating, say and find that it varies by race to a small but statistically significant degree.
The gap remains, albeit in weaker form, even with the addition of extensive controls for geography, industry and union status, among others. Non-white male workers spend an additional 1.1% of the day not working while on the job, or an extra five minutes per day.
Assuming their controls are adequate, that would still leave 90% of the wage difference between white workers and ethnic minorities, which was recently estimated to be 14%, unexplained.

At he “diverse” company I work at it is asian (Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese)legal immigrants and first generation Americans who work harder and long that loofan (Whites).

Ive worked in many socially varied work environments for many decades. Ive seen reality, see it now. Middle class and age whites, Asians, Indians and many Hispanics generally work steady and put in good effort. Others, not so much. Millennial whites are largely a disappointment - leave that smart phone in your car! Ill work as long as I want to, were in demand.

I suggest this study is deeply flawed. First of all, it depends on self-reporting. Really? Half of us (regardless of demographic group) are proud of our ability in creative writing.
The other half of us are totally unaware of our biases.
I challenge FReepers to go into 10 fast food places run by whites, 10 run by Hispanics, 10 run by Blacks, 10 run by Koreans, 10 by Chinese, 10 by Indians, 10 by Arabs.
Then have 100 hundred FReepers report on what they see objectively of those workers. Hands down, Hispanics in fast food will deliver the food faster, more accurately, and with the cleanest restaurants.
Black workers in an upscale white area will deliver the food just as fast and just as accurately as whites, but slower than Hispanics. Blacks where the fastfood joint is in a Black area will deliver much slower and much less accurately in a much dirtier facility than in the white area. This is related to the fact that Blacks do what is expected of them. And what is expected of them varies depending on where they are at.
I could go on with other generalizations.
I could go on with construction workers. Compare hanging drywall. Who does it fastest? with the least amount of waste and inaccuracy?
Compare it to call centers and customer service. In your company who would you rather have being the face of the company to the customer?
Obviously, each individual should be rated as an individual and not be punished by stereotypes. No stereotype is 100%, or even 70% accurate. But there are statistical skews by demographic group and they are not what this study suggests.
Did Bell actually specifically claim those things, or is this some reviewers "interpretation" of what he said?? IMO, a low IQ can also cause low income, low job performance, pregnancy out of wedlock, etc., etc. Chicken?? Or egg??

Not in my experience. Hispanics screw up orders, fail to obey hygiene rules, make lousy food, and half of them fail to show up for work.
There is a reason Chick-fil-A is the #1 fast food restaurant: Hiring practices that have standards. They hire primarily whites due to having those standards. They have very few Hispanics.
CFA has $4 million per store sales and increasing. MCDs is a mere $2.5 million and falling.

Whites do. They have the fewest quality issues. Hispanics have lousy quality. I have a BIL that ran construction for Toll Brothers. He built thousands of homes. Without question he tried to get white crews because the rework was low and the quality was high. The Hispanics construction crews had zero quality concerns. They had low quality and high rework.

White Americans. They tend to speak proper English and are smart enough to understand customer needs. It is why customer support centers have gone away from the Indian call centers; except for Microsoft, but that company is doomed anyway.
If I remember correctly, Murray and Herrnstein’s conclusion was that social welfare programs to “fix” problems of education levels or socio-economic status in “under-privileged” communities were not successful. The Great Society was inherently flawed because social engineering did not lead to improved individual outcomes in terms of income, job performance, pregnancy out of wedlock, and crime.
What mattered, statistically, was IQ. Which is much harder to “fix”. People with lower IQs tended to have bad outcomes in terms of income, job performance, pregnancy out of wedlock, and crime.
Murray and Herrnstein were pretty careful to say that this was not a skin problem. It’s not really race. It’s an IQ problem. But, all studies agree that there are racial disparities when it comes to IQ. And so there is a tie between these things. But social engineering won’t fix anything.
It's been said that without the massive make work program for blacks known as government work, there would not even be a black middle class in America.
Put another way, the black middle class is an artificial construct paid for by white people.
I am going to make the bold statement that we should stop paying for that and allow water to rise to its own level.
This would also return competence to those positions.

And if one actually understands the Bell curve statistically, it doesn't matter if whites have a peak IQ a few points higher than blacks....there are still persons of high intelligence of any race. The correct approach is to judge people as individuals.
I read a few years back that the psychometricians had identified a non-verbal test that is a better predictor of overall intelligence performance than IQ, and which works even with very young children....high spatial recognition.
It turns out that the simple "put the odd-shaped blocks in the right shaped hole" (and other similar visual) test(s) correlates better than IQ with life performance. Higher than math ability OR verbal ability.
Facts are RACIST!
Simply put, a work ethic, or lack of one, is purely cultural. It has nothing to do with race, per say, just the primary culture of people of certain races.
For instance, saying Blacks work less because of their race is wrong. Saying that popular Black Culture, like that railed against by Bill Cosby, back when he was “America’s Dad,” discourages hard work and education is correct.
Compare work by immigrant Blacks, who haven’t been inculcated by popular Black culture in the USA, to that of native born Blacks, and you’ll see that for the most part, the immigrants have work ethics that are really no different than those that are popularly associated with Jews and Asians. And again, those are cultural, having nothing to do with genetics.
