The father of one of the basketball players who had been facing shoplifting charges in China downplayed President Trumps role in having him released and Trumps response may be one of the worst Ive seen yet.
Now, to be fair, I certainly do understand why President Trump would have been upset by this. If you want to argue that LiAngelo Balls father, LaVar, should have shown gratitude instead of dismissal of President Trumps efforts, then Id say thats a fine argument. Whats not fine, however, is this:
Now that the three basketball players are out of China and saved from years in jail, LaVar Ball, the father of LiAngelo, is unaccepting of what I did for his son and that shoplifting is no big deal. I should have left them in jail! Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) November 19, 2017
I mean, really? These three players thanked you by name, but because one of their fathers said something that you didnt like, all three of them should have had to rot in a foreign jail? Theres really no appropriate response to a reaction like that except for, just, come on, man.
Of course, Im not saying that these players dont deserve any punishment. They do . . . and they deserve some ridicule, too. After all, not only is stealing wrong, but stealing in China also makes you kind of an idiot. These three embarrassed themselves, UCLA, their families, and our entire country but they still dont deserve to rot in a Chinese jail, and President Trump did the right thing by working to free them. Heres the thing, though: President Trump should have worked to free them simply because it was the right thing to do, and his tweet suggests he did it looking for admiration.
This wasnt presidential, and Im not using that word in the way that most people use it. After all, when most people criticize Trump for not being presidential, what they mean is that he doesnt conduct himself with the kind of decorum that they believe someone in his position should. This, however, goes so far beyond that: It suggests that President Trump does not understand that his role is to be a servant for the people of the United States of all of the people, whether they (or their fathers) like him or not.
Yes, what President Trump did was noble, but it wasnt extraordinary it was his job. This is America, and our presidents dont just leave U.S. citizens in foreign countries jails regardless of whether or not those citizens thought it was a good idea to steal luxury merchandise or not. President Trump should have done what he did because its the kind of thing he was elected to do, not in exchange for recognition from the players, their fathers, or anyone.
unpresidential, yes
but we just survived 8 years of an illegal alien enemy agent in our WH and THAT was far, far far more unpresidential (and it was unconstitutional, t00)
and Obozo was giving people the Finger and other obscene gestures while occupying our White House, too
La Var Ball’s response to President Trump - MOST ungrateful.
Trump should have let them go through the Chinese judicial system (such as it is) & be sentenced to 5-10 years, then work the deal with Xi. Maybe the 3, especially Bar’s son, would have learned something. This way, they did not - bailed out again with few consequences. Evidently, they were in a luxury hotel while being detained.
The bubble-headed wraith who wrote this is one of the most annoying pretend conservatives in media.
He used the media attention of Trump springing his kid to get free media coverage of the low rent, failing tee shirt business he is trying to get off the ground since its founding in 2016
It's dysfunctional, sick and distinctly unhelpful to their children's recovery from their self destructive actions, but heck it's not even close to a new low given the behavior we have come to expect from that particular “community”
Maybe next week Ms Timph can do a story about how athletes being arrested for theft while on Student -Athlete good will trips abroad disgraces America as a whole and generates negative goodwill and destroys public opinion of America in foreign countries
This is bigger than three wanna be hoods wasting promising careers and their Warhol mandated 15 minutes of fame on shoplifting in China and a lousy father desperate to garner another 15 minutes free publicity for himself and his failing tee shirt biz .
Trump did the right thing in denouncing the losers he tried to help and washing his hands of the whole tacky, low rent ghetto affair
I can't wait for the next BLM or "New" Black Panthers violent outburst, or Ferguson style riots. Aren't we about due for some more of their crap?
I only wanna support “unpresidential” presidents.
The blue blood, washington insiders, the career “servants”, the grifters and looters....NO...
Congress and Senate also need to be totally flushed out of these career politicians! They are one party, a party of corrupt demons that have turned us into a Socialist nation.
Trump is just an obstacle to this core objective. As a primary target, they will utilize every tool and tactic available against him.
Criticizing him for what he does, what he doesn't do, and/or what they perceive he may or may not do is just a routine 9-5 job.
The media is a tough 'profession'. You're faced with an endless demand for content so that the owners (publishers) can generate advertising sales. (Or, in the case of NR and other vanity projects, external funding.)
Any functioning journo-list will have a pre-prepared, detailed outline & flowchart in which to pump out columns and opinions. It may appear skewed, but that's why like a semi looks like a work truck; it's supposed to. That is, that's its function.
The definition of “presidential” is as fluid as water. To a liberal, the more “politically correct” you are, the more “presidential” you are.
What Trump said to that asshat is the type of comments that need to be said to the lowlifes.
A “reporter” has no credentials to declare what is, and what isn’t, “presidential”.
Why oh WHY does anyone listen to a thing this woman has to say! I used to accidentally see her on FOX and couldnt stand her. I heard enough from her to make it necessary for me to question how in the world she was ever hired to be a pretend critical thinker. Seriously, I dont get it.
While many are enjoying the bounty of honey, many others are severely allergic to BEE stings, haha.
A lot of folks decry the President for this undeserved kindness, or of his hiring ‘the enemy’, but I see it all as evidence that he is no respecter of persons. He gives everyone space to get it together.
For those who blow it (gee, surprise), the blame ends up squarely and very publicly on them. Oh well, he tweets his disappointments. “Sad”.
Unconventional. And as ingenious as it is open and sincere. No guile. The man *is* his name.
No wonder the dark side is freaking out.
Intimidation Politics has worked so well for them.
Now they don’t know what to do.
Awwwah!
I will admit that my first reaction to Trump’s tweet was to cringe.
But then I thought that isn’t it better to have a President say what he really thinks, than to have one who constantly lies to our face?
MAGA
Only a very “Presidential” President, who had already met and exchanged friendly words with the leader of China, could have achieved this.
If three shoplifters had been arrested during the Obama Administration, they would probably still be rotting in a Chinese prison.
Unless, of course, the NEW President, being Presidential, negotiated their release.
Actually, they broke the law in a foreign country, and by that countries laws, do deserve to serve time in jail.
Some random thoughts:
1. This incident points out an intersection of two entitlement cultures in the US: "black" culture, and the special treatment athletes get at the collegiate/pro level. Its the mindset that one can break the law and suffer no consequences for the act. Well, that might fly in certain situations, but those three "hopefully" learned a lesson that there are places in this world where that attitude won't fly.
2. Thank God that Specialists show on Fox got cancelled. I'm not sure who was worse --Eboni Williams or this Kat person. I'm beginning to think it's Kat.
3. If this article, which IMHO is full of contradictions in logic is an indication of most millenials, this country is in trouble.
Trumps answer hit a nerve. For the President to make such a counter struck deep and did severe damage. To counter an uppity black man is unacceptable to the PC left.
The author is an American enemy.
National Globalist Cheap Labor Review. Fixed
K. Timpf appears to be a bitter woman, and NR has gone left. I happened to like Trump’s response. Coming from the President it is presidential, with him setting a new style.
——a very Presidential President——
The author whines in a state of gross ignorance.
Donald Trump is President of the United States.
Therefore, anything he says or Tweets is Presidential
As a side note: Those three got more help from un-presidential Trump than Otto Warmbier got from “presidential” Obama.
