How Hollywood Secularized Johnny Cash, a Man of Great Faith

Here's ..side of the musician you didnt see in the film 'Walk the Line,' released 12 years ago this weekend.
Johnny Cash had two loves, and we all met one of them thanks to the biopic Walk the Line, which was released in 2005. Her name was June Carter.
But Cash had another love. A higher love. One never mentioned by name in the movie: Jesus Christ.
There are some hints about that other love in the film. In an early scene, a young Cash, played brilliantly by Joaquin Phoenix, is auditioning for the man he hopes might make him the next Elvis Presley: Sam Phillips, the Sun Records impresario. Cash walks into the small Memphis studio and begins playing a Gospel song.
Phillips isnt moved and tells Cash he should play something more meaningful more relevant. No one listens to Gospel anymore, Phillips said to the young Cash.
Cash plays a secular song, gets signed, and the rest was history at least in the movie version. But it turns out that in real life, Cash never stopped playing Gospel music. Almost a quarter of the songs he wrote were in some way about his faith or the Bible. In addition, Cash recorded the entire King James version of the New Testament, performed at many Billy Graham revivals, and even made a movie about the life of Jesus. In his spare time, Cash studied the Bible more than most Ph.D.s in divinity. Somehow, none of that made it onto the screen during the 136-minute running time of "Walk the Line."
Stripping Jesus Christ out of Johnny Cash's life story is like leaving naked 19-year-old girls out of Hugh Hefner's or telling the story of Jackie Robinson without mentioning his race or segregation. It's that serious an omission.

Interesting.
I certainly was not aware of this regarding Johnny Cash.
But of course hollyweird wouldn’t show any of it anyway.

“Believers and nonbelievers alike know such struggles. That’s what attracted so many people to Cash’s music: his humility and his empathy.”
Cash said this: “I’m not a Christian artist. I’m an artist who is Christian.”

It was like seeing the remake of Brideshead Revisited by Evelyn Waugh a few years ago.It was a brilliant and subtle conversion story and they took all that out.So the movie made no sense and I almost stood up in the theater and yelled what the real story was.So frustrating.

Hey, I read something interesting from a State friend about Johnny Cash. He was arrested in Starkville back in the 60’s for picking flowers from a lady's garden. He spent the night in jail. I was there at that time but I sure do not remember that.

Back in the 50s and 60s doctors handed out amphetamines and barbiturates like candy. If you complained about low energy they gave you Dexedrine or Benzedrine, if you couldn't sleep they gave you Seconal. A lot of people figured it was OK if their doctor gave it to them and ended up addicted. How does that mean someone is or isn't sincere in their faith?

His last album I think it was American IV Has a song "When the man comes around" he wrote. He's reading from The Revelation in the beginning and end of the song. Some seemed to know Cash more than others and wrote about him. Kris Kristofferson wrote at least two songs inspired by Cash one was To Beat The Devil and the other The Pilgrim Chapter,33 written in part about Cash.
Cash struggled with his own demons and was honest about it. As far back as the 1970's he did a movie called The Gospel Road about the life of Christ narrated by Cash and June was also in it. I'm assuming he likely wrote most of the songs in it.

Very few people know Hank Willams Sr had an Open Spine and was in constant pain. Hank penned some great Gospel songs in his short life.

Interesting. I certainly was not aware of this regarding Johnny Cash. But of course hollyweird wouldnt show any of it anyway. Even Robert Duvall could not get funding for his movie "the Apostle." And despite "The Gospel Road" Cash did being a 20th Century Fox studio film, evil hates the light and so such is not well known.

I think the Carter family helped Cash become a better man. Certainly not perfect.

the true story of cash is that of faith and redemption. Cash doing a concert at a prison was not a publicity stunt but an honest attempt at ministering to those who were lost.
