Congressional investigators make first evidence requests in Russia nuclear bribery case

Republican House and Senate investigators on Wednesday launched their effort to secure evidence from federal agencies about an Obama-era Russian corruption case as lawmakers prepare to interview a former undercover informant who helped the FBI chronicle bribery, kickbacks and money laundering inside Moscow's nuclear industry.

In letters to the FBI, Justice Department, Treasury Department and intelligence agencies, the congressional investigators demanded to know whether the evidence the FBI gathered starting in 2009 against figures inside Rosatom was circulated to government agencies before the Obama administration made a series of favorable decisions between 2010 and 2012 benefitting the Russian nuclear firm.

One of those decisions included the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) approval of a sale of the Uranium One firm with large US assets to Rosatom, while others opened the door for Rosatom's Tenex arm to win lucrative commercial nuclear fuel contracts.

The favorable decisions occurred even as the FBI captured widespread evidence that Tenex official Vadim Mikerin and others were carrying out a racketeering scheme. Three individuals, including Mikerin, eventually pleaded guilty to various crimes.

"It is unclear to the Committees whether the FBI alerted the other members of the CFIUS about the investigation into Russia's effort to obtain control of the U.S. uranium market," a letter from the House Intelligence and the House Oversight and Government Reform Committees read.

The letters, signed by Republican committee chairmen Devin Nunes, (R-Calif.) and Trey Gowdy, (R-S.C.), as well as subcommittee chairmen Ron DeSantis, (R-Fla.), and Peter King, (R-N.Y), demanded the agencies turn over a wide swath of documents.

Separately, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, (R-Iowa), sent a letter to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein demanding that the FBI and Justice Department retain all documents in the Russia investigation for review by the committee.

"In light of the fact that the confidential informant is now cleared to speak with Congress, please preserve all records relating to his involvement with the Department as an informant and the resulting criminal cases," Grassley wrote.

Gowdy has been talking about it. Both he and Sessisaid the threshold for a Special Prosecutor is very high. So Gowdy said...fine...we can investigate...and that's where we are.

IIRC, Sessions said someone has already been prosecuted in the Uranium One case.

Hillary must be fuming.

She’s worried a Uranium One “special prosecutor” might start digging around her corrupt campaign. Obviously a lot of dead bodies there.

If the threshold is so high how did we wind up with Mueller? His appointment was all based on what Comey leaked to a friend and other flimsy evidence of nothing.

The Senate committee searching for Clinton’s alleged wrongdoing is keeping their witness’s name cloaked. However, William D. Campbell, a lobbyist, confirmed to Reuters he is the informant who will testify and provide documents to Congress about the Obama Administration’s 2010 approval of the sale of Uranium One, a Canadian company with uranium mines in the United States, to Russia’s Rosatom.

This is just breaking... hence the ‘abuse of power’ screech.

Rest assured, the deep state actors have shredded every last bit of evidence one year ago to the day.

Gowdy? Guaranteed this investigation will result in nothing but grandstanding. No serious pursuit of corruption possible.

PUHHLEEEEASE! Everyone knows this is just a Vast Right Wing Conspiracy to...................bring the unethical, illegal, immoral, greedy, hateful actions of Hillary into the open and shine the light of truth upon them where hopefully it will work as water did on the Wicked Witch Of The West.

Unfortunately, I think she will be protected with the raincoat like protection of liberal voters slime and stupidity.

Interesting correspondence, since Grassley has also requested the appointment of a separate Special Counsel, specifically because of Rosenstein's prior involvement in a potential coverup of the bribes which allowed the uranium sale to go through.
