I heard a similar story about Carter - he made a lame joke when he was in Mexico about “Moctezuma’s Revenge” - the (corrupt) administration there apparently wasn’t happy (even if the comment were true) - and saw Cater as weak and foolish.
When Reagan came to power (Thank God), the Mexicans respected him and the president of Mexico gifted Reagan with a beautiful horse and saddle.
