That’s another part of the problem. If tests for CTE can be done on living people, then will happen is that every NFL team and scouting service will be including these tests in every physical exam they give to current and prospective players. This will give everyone a baseline set of measurements for players before they sign an NFL contract. It will also cause a lot of current players to immediately fail their next physical.

Isn’t it funny that after all these years nothing like this NEVER existed. Yet it came to be discovered some 6-8 years ago. Fast forward to today and still we have yet to hear the most traumatic of all sports with respect to repeated brain trauma is boxing and this is never spoken of? Why is that?

Many players opted out. Their cases proceed.

Yeah, since I work with people who have dementia, I did not think anything they said in the post was about dementia - but rather about motor difficulties. The people I know with it can button their shirts and have lots of functional abilities - cooking for example. But they sundown quite predictably and they tell some pretty amazing stories.

Found this on a google search - "While symptoms of dementia can vary greatly, at least two of the following core mental functions must be significantly impaired to be considered dementia:

Memory
Communication and language
Ability to focus and pay attention
Reasoning and judgment
Visual perception
People with dementia may have problems with short-term memory, keeping track of a purse or wallet, paying bills, planning and preparing meals, remembering appointments or traveling out of the neighborhood."

Anyway if you do a search for dementia diagnostic criteria there are sites which I think might answer your question.

...he probably played football for 10-15 years at other levels before he ever signed his first NFL contract. How do you assign liability in a case like that?

The legal principle is well established -- the one with the deepest pockets pays the lion's share.

Oh, that’s interesting.

Any Oklahoma fan can tell you about Tony Dorsett getting knocked out cold by a guy named Scott Hill on one of the first plays from scrimmage when Pitt played OU back in ‘75, IIRC.

Carried off the field, and then they brought him out and tried to play him in the second half.

Plenty of liability for everyone.

Per the April 2016 ESPN article, $5mil if s player is diagnosed with ALS and $4mil per family for CTE post-death diagnoses, and then lesser amounts from there

The question I have is what is the incidence of CTE in the NFL compared to CTE in other sports or professions?

Also, while it is possible that the trauma occurred while in the NFL, how much occurred in college or younger?

Furthermore, might the NFL have less of an issue if the helmets were more like the old leather helmets, so that the defense would have to tackle without using their heads, and that running backs would not duck when taking hits, similar to what happens in rugby?

It’s O.J. All he really wants is to get his trophies back. And he really liked that white Bronco.

My best guess- is Positron Emission Tomagraphy (PET) Tau- not something I can order in my neck of the woods and pretty cutting edge but clearly the way things are headed. They also have PET amyloid for Alzheimers- I am not able to order that either :(

We’ve had family with vascular dementia and Alzheimers. None of them ever had/have had a PET scan. Plenty of CTS and MRIs, but the diagnoses were made without the use of a PET. We’ve also been told that a definitive diagnosis could only be obtained with an autopsy. If that last bit is accurate, makes me wonder how the diagnosis of CTE is being made.
