Sen. Ron Johnson (R., Wis.) said he opposes the Senate Republican tax package, becoming the first GOP voice of dissent that, if it gains momentum, could force significant changes or jeopardize the partys goal to pass the bill before the end of the year.
If they can pass it without me, let them, Mr. Johnson said in an interview Wednesday, adding that the plan unfairly benefits corporations more than other types of businesses. Im not going to vote for this tax package.
Any Republican opposition is significant because GOP leaders are counting on near universal support from within the party to pass a bill on party line votes. With 52 seats in the Senate, Republicans can lose no more than two votes unless they can somehow find a way to win votes from Democrats.
Other Senate Republicans have expressed concerns. Jeff Flake of Arizona, for example, has worried about deficits and Susan Collins of Maine has worried about Republican plans to repeal the insurance coverage mandate in the Affordable Care Act as part of a tax overhaul.
Until now, no Senate Republican has come out definitively against the GOP tax plan. The risk for GOP leaders is that other Republicans get behind Mr. Johnsons opposition, and either stop the bill or slow its passage, depriving Republicans of the chance to boost after-tax income household income next year, during the elections.
Still, in a statement issued in the late afternoon, Mr. Johnson said he hoped that Republicans could address the disparity so he could support the final version of the tax bill. Such changes could be expensive and might force tax writers to make other changes. .

Horrid isnt a bug. Its a feature.
"Horrid isn't a bug. It's a feature." is not only a non sequitor, it's just plain old dumb; not to mention two stupid sentences that should be one, using the correct punctuation!
“You want to increase taxes on millions in the middle class”
What I want, and what the POINT of this is, is to make voters in high tax states like CA understand what it is TRULY costing them.
The only way the Salt tax burden is fair to those of living in states don’t spend wildly and iiresponsibly, is to give a LARGER Salt deduction to make up the difference.
Ridiculous insults notwithstanding, When you FEEL the burden, maybe you’ll get off your but and DO something about it, instead of whining about it on an obscure message board?
1) Vote in outrageous tax breaks for the K-street crowd and Cheap Labor Express.
2) The voters, enraged, vote out the GOP, putting in Dems.
3) The Dems impeach Trump.
4) The GOPe gets to keep their perks and run Jeb? or someone again, losing to Hillary or Bernie or someone even worse.
...the *plan* at this point is to import the entire Third World to replace all the whites in the US except those who went to Harvard/Yale/Princeton and so forth.
...but if it gets that far, either Iran or North Korea or China will launch a nuclear attack on the US.
“My best estimate is that California receives a $30 BILLION dollar a year subsidy from the rest of us via their SALT deduction.”
When the wealthy California taxpayer, that largely votes DEMOCRAT, finally has to pay THIER FAIR SHARE, they are going to scream bloody murder about it.
WHICH IS EXACTLY THE POINT, FOLKS
“Bovine ecrement. If you have been over it and over it, you know that this has no to very little effect on the average wageearner. It DOES effect high wage earners, and more importantly BIG SPENDERS in HIGH TAX states.
Try using an ancient, magical concept that was considered racist for the last decade, called...MATH...It will never lie to you, and it will always give you the correct answer.”
i don’t know your income situation nor who taught you math, but i know as a middle class taxpayer and a former member of a math honor society, that either of these tax bills are bad news for the average taxpayer.
and if you are so sure of your “MATH,” why don’t you make us a nothing to lose offer to pay all of us victims of this tax cut the extra money we will be sending to the IRS if either plan becomes law?
and if you are right and we are wrong, you can have the self satisfaction of telling us: i told you so.
It's not a feature, it's an option.
(that's what we used to say during my software development days "back in the day")
People might dismiss that as a wild conspiracy mentality, but I just had the same idea today. I got to thinking about how Murkowski is one of the Senators that torpedoed Obamacare repeal.
Mark Levin says McConnell backed Murkowski over Miller, the Republican standard bearer from the Tea Party in 2010. So she owes him big time. And McConnell carries a lot of weight in the GOP because of his ability to help or hinder fund raising. IOW it seems like McConnell has a ton of leverage over someone like Murkowski and she wouldn't have done that if she thought it would anger him. And I've seen no sign he is angry with her.
Occam's razor suggests that McConnell wanted Obamacare repeal to fail. Now we've suddenly got Johnson seemingly coming out of nowhere to announce his opposition. Will he suffer any repercussions? If not, that would speak volumes.
I'm at the point where I think conservatives have to work to defeat McConnell in 2020, even if a conservative challenge fails in the primaries. IOW conservatives should openly campaign and vote for the Democrat. The loss of a seat would be worth it to finally get rid of him. And if his replacement is just as bad, then do the same thing to him. Eventually enough of the closet Democrats will be purged that the GOP will actually become a conservative party.
Which makes NO sense at all, on this thread; especially to all of us who weren’t with you “back in the day”...which is ALL on this thread.
The middle class doesn’t pay higher taxes under the bills except in high tax states. Those high tax state tax payers are effectively being subsidized by people in the low tax states.
We need a corporate tax cut for economic growth. The stock market has been rising rapidly since Trump won in significant part because of expectations for a corporate tax cut. The stock market tanked today after Johnson made his statement.
You seem to be echoing the typical Democrat/socialist theme of corporations being evil or something.
Three questions:
Do you know why he is not supporting it?
Do you know his record?
Do you support this tax bill?
“Those high tax state tax payers are effectively being subsidized by people in the low tax states.”
How?
.
There is plenty of reason, the two bills being floated, suck.
Did you crunch the numbers yourself former math honor society person? It seems like you are believing stuff that probably originates with Democrat propagandists. There are people calling talk shows with false talking points who I think are working for Democrat connected groups.
According to this article, in 2018 over 80% of taxpayers earning between $25,000 and $307,900 get a cut under the House Tax Bill. Of those who don't get a cut, most of those in the lower income range don't get an increase either. So it's not that 20% pay more.
It does increase taxes to a higher number of middle class tax payers by 2027 (those earning between $25,000 and $307,000) - about 30% - assuming nothing changes.
I believe that the biggest benefit to the nation is the corporate tax cuts. They would significantly boost economic growth.
If we assume that the overall tax rate has to be increased to make up for those deductions of high state taxes (which is a good assumption) then it follows that tax payers from low tax states are paying a higher rate than they otherwise would.
The reason they are doing this complicated stuff is that they want to abide by some rule that a tax cut can't increase projected deficits by more than some amount. In other words they need to recover some money to partially "pay for" the lost revenue from the rate reductions. There's also an increase in child tax deductions.
Thank you so much, that clears up things for me,
.
If you have a better tax plan that will pass I am all ears. You think we’ll get a better deal from President Biden? Because that is where we are headed if the Party of No (as the Dems call the GOP) gets there way.
Johnson is free to write his own bill and gather support for it. We both know that won’t be happening.
>Hes just the designated maverick to ensure the bill fails. Kabuki theater. The gop faction of the uniparty is bound and determined to lose the election in 2018. They want to return to the good old days in the minority when they didnt have to lead.
Hence my tag line:
You couldn’t be more uninformed, not to mention WRONG, if you tried.
