Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell on Tuesday publicly floated the idea of getting Attorney General Jeff Sessions to take his old Senate seat, as Republicans continue to seek alternatives to Judge Roy Moore.
McConnell made the comments to the Wall Street Journal's CEO Council while talking about who could mount a successful write-in campaign, like Sen. Lisa Murkowski did in Alaska in 2010. McConnell said she was popular in the state and was universally well-known, qualities that Sessions has in Alabama.
"The name being most often discussed may not be available, but the Alabamian who would fit that standard would be the attorney general," McConnell said. "He's totally well-known and is extremely popular in Alabama."
"That obviously would be a big move for him and for the president," McConnell said. He said President Trump is discussing what to do in the Alabama race "in great detail" as he wraps up his Asia trip.
McConnell conceded that he isn't sure Sessions would come back after leaving earlier this year to take over as head of the Department of Justice. Some reports were already saying Monday that Sessions had no interest.

and Rudy Giuliani will take his place as AG ?
If a write-in campaign proved to be needed, Sessions would have been the only one with a strong chance of winning. But now that Mitch has stuck his nose into Alabama affairs again, he might have assured that even Sessions could not win a write-in.
Because Moore said he would vote against keeping McConnell as the Senate Majority Leader. This would take away most of McConnell's 'power'. People who are threatened with removal of their power will do anything to stop that from happening. Anything.
No doubt. And any write in candidate starts out at a huge disadvantage. I don't think McGobler is serious, at all. He's just trying to give Sessions some much needed credibility right now. Too bad that Laz and others see right through it.
Those “birds of a feather” establishment sure are one of a kind... and I don’t like ANY of them.. when won’t back Pres Trump.. they are a shameful bunch of worthless elitist ... and OUT they go!! They think they are able to call what goes and comes... please, voters.. show them who are the real people!!
If Sessions can’t do a better job in the Senate than he has as AG, who needs him? Maybe his AG performance is telling on how bad he was as a senator.
Get rid of him AND McConnell.
True, but in retrospect, moving Sessions out of the Senate was a colossal blunder. He’s been useless as AG. I like and admire Moore, feel that the charges against him are total BS, and bitterly resent the way he is being treated — but this idea has a slim — very slim — potential for win-win.
Sessions asks Roy if he can have his seat back, Sessions goes in as a write-in with Roy’s endorsement, he wins. We keep the seat, and Trump has a chance to correct the bad mistake of making him AG in the first place. I’m sure there is some way we could make it up to Roy in the future.
Trump could then appoint a gutsy, hardnosed AG that would put the fear of God into those assholes at Justice and the FBI.
It's a bit premature to claim that given he was up 10 in an Emerson poll yesterday.
Getting rid of Sessions only works if the Senate allows Trump to replace him with someone that will pursue justice and his agenda on border enforcement.
READ THIS MITCH MCCONNELL:
If Moore did what you believe then why did he stop? I thought being a pedo, sexual assaulter wasn’t curable. So he only did this 40 years ago then he stops on a dime and never ever does it again. No other women have come out from the 1970s till now, no women from the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s. So either he was miraculously cured OR he NEVER did it in the first place!
At this point, that may be the best solution. It will get Sessions out as AG and maybe keep the seat in the the R column.
The smear campaign has been effective against Moore. Now, whether he did or didn’t, it seems the Senate R’s plan to keep him out of the Senate, even if he does win the election.

Politics is dirty business. That is why I never even considered running for dog catcher.
Hmm, I liked the idea when Doug from Upland expressed it.... if the Turtle likes it, Im starting to question it.
I think it depends about “stronger” relative to what.
Personally, I think a lot of folks who voted for Trump mostly voted against Hillary; FR skews much more towards people who LIKE the Donald, in the real world one can dislike our current President and yet realize that the alternative was suicide. Sessions’ anti Marijuana and particularly his Pro Civil Asset Forfeiture stances are both losing propositions with the public at large, deep state or no.
We could get someone confirmed who was still strong on immigration, which is the biggie.
Didnt the Pres hired McConnells wife??
Doesn’t matter if matched groped or not. The mere allegation is sufficient
That’s right.s
It’s the seriousness of the charge, donchaknow. /s
If I 'get disappeared', you know that the Deep State got sick of me seeing through their theater on such a prominent forum, and decided to sideline me.
“How could it be worse” is a rather lame expression. It can ALWAYS be worse, and it will be!
We had Jeff Sessions for long enough! He had a lukewarm voting record but he was not a dynamic senator. He is a poor public speaker. He gave the flattest speech last time I was at CPAC of any speaker during the whole conference.
We need a wave maker not a seat warmer. Sessions is no activist.
