Southwesterly wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour are forecast to blow across Lake Tahoe Wednesday, churning waves up to three feet high, according to the National Weather Service.
This could bring some surfers to the lake's north and northwest shores, says Scott McGuire with the Weather Service's Reno office.
"The winds are coming unaffected across the entire length of the lake and it builds up those waves as it moves across," McGuire says. "Southerly winds are ideal but southwesterly still provides a decent fetch."
Tahoe's waves aren't nearly as popular as its slopes, but when the winds kick up and propel waves, it's not unusual to see a few people hanging ten on breakers close to the lake shore.
As a series of weak storms blasted the Sierra this month, the winds began kicking up, signaling the start of the "surf season" on the lake.

Surfing on Lake Tahoe! I had no idea there was a "surf season" up there.
It’s a new one on me, but I think it’s very cool.
That lake is extremely cold, even in the summer, and has a rapid fall-off in depth close to shore (the lake is ~1645 feet deep). The guy in the picture is wearing a wet-suit, but anyone who tries this without one is flirting with disaster. I almost drowned in that lake on a warm spring day, as the cold water induced bronchospasm. Just sayin...
Cool it is. That lake is about a whisker from being a skating pond even in the summer. Brrrr.
LOL. Good one. Hadn’t thought of that either. That would be my guess though.
Lake Tahoe is SO beautiful! I’ve only been there once, but I’ll never forget it. :)
People surf on The Great Lakes 6-7 months out of the year. Now THAT is some hardcore surfing!

I wonder if Fredo’s body will ever be found?
My wife grew up on Lake Tahoe every summer through about age 18. They had a little teardrop trailer and camped all summer long from the day after school got out until the day before school started again. Water skiing every day — without wet suits! It must have been a great life!
We down here at the Bay Area appreciate you collecting the cement for us! Our showers and tubs next July and August salute you!
I grew up on a lake in the Summer months, too! My Grandparents had a place on Big Silver Lake in Wautoma, WI. Mom and Dad would drop Sis & I off for the Summer, and (maybe) visit on the weekends. ;)
It was/is a great life for a kid.
Bailing over that rocky bottom at the end of your ride looks like it could be bruising!
I’ve seen guys surfing on ferry wakes in Wisconsin before.
Wonder if this was taken at North Shore?
Nice, Diana...that must have been heaven! My wife’s Dad, Mom, brother and her would go up at the start of the season and drop off the trailer. Dad returned to the Bay Area for work. I think he was able to get a total of about a month off during the summer to join them, then came back up to bring them back home. My wife always talks fondly of it. It’s amazing a middle class family in the SF Bay Area could do that.
These days, with the modern rat race, it’s out of the question. Most people are scared to death to take off two consecutive weeks! And nothing is affordable any more.
I think that’s cool too. That doesn’t surprise me as much as the waves on the lake here.
I didn’t realize you could get that decent of defined waves on the lake just from wind.
Chop? Yes. Defined almost ‘surf like’ waves? No.
It’s a d@mn SHAME that so many people miss out on:
Beach bonfires wrapped in the arms of Mom or Dad or a Grandparent...
Catching fireflies in a jar...
Jumping off the dock/pier with wild abandon...
Fishing for Crappie and Yellow Perch...
Catching Leopard Frogs & Minnows (for bait)...
Drive-In Movies...
Ice Cream Cones at the Dairy Queen...
Bathing in the lake with a bar of Ivory Soap; because it floats...
Friday Night Fish Fry - with the fish you caught yourself...
Grandpa singing: “I love to go swimmin’ with bow-legged women and swim between their legs!” LOL!
Grandma ringing the Cow Bell to call you in for the night...
SAND in EVERYTHING you own, and...
You and everyone you knew, sun-kissed and smelling of Coppertone Suntan Lotion all Summer long. *LOVE*
Thanks for the memories! Such. Good. Times.
Glad they were mine...and your wife’s! Have her check my list to see if I forgot anything! :)
