The White House is considering economist Mohamed El-Erian as one of several candidates to potentially serve as the Federal Reserves vice chairman, according to a person familiar with the matter.
The process of selecting the Feds No. 2 official began this month after President Donald Trump nominated Fed governor Jerome Powell to succeed Fed Chairwoman Janet Yellen when her term expires next February.
Mr. El-Erian, the former chief executive of Pacific Investment Management Co. and a former deputy director of the International Monetary Fund, is one of several candidates under consideration for the vice chair position, and no decisions have been made, according to the person familiar with the matter. The White House has placed a heavy focus on selecting a vice chair with a strong background in monetary policy, this person said.
A White House spokeswoman declined to comment, and Mr. El-Erian didnt immediately respond to a request for comment.
Stanley Fischer resigned last month as the Feds vice chairman, citing personal reasons, and the search for his replacement is now a priority for White House officials. The president has two other vacancies to fill on the Feds board of governors. All of these positions are subject to Senate confirmation.
The White House is also considering the nomination of a Kansas banking regulator for a seat on the Feds board of governors, according to two people familiar with the matter.
Michelle Bowman was confirmed as the Kansas bank commissioner in January and would be nominated to a spot reserved for a community banker or regulator of community banks. In 2014, Congress reserved one of seven seats on the Feds board for a community banker and the position has never been filled.
Ms. Bowmans candidacy was first reported by Politico.

Put a guy from a religion that does not believe in charging interest in charge of the nation’s banking system.
What could go wrong?
Smart as hell.
yes, he is. I don't know why he'd want this headache though.
would be an excellent choice...
Is he a Muslim?
The theocratic mindset is one that should be kept out of an already principle fragilized Fed Reserve.
China is betting on bitcoins because they know that people will trust a currency they get paid to bank with instead of this wrothless dollar that gets corrupt by the day. It is scary to think about it, but Babylon is about to go down here
As long as he is good and doesn’t believe in Sharia, I am fine with it.
Muslim first name, jewish last name... who knows. Some of these kids with jewish father only feel rejected by the jewish community and are rabidly antisemitic
He's done everything else in finance. He doesn't need more money.
Seems like a Trump sort of pick. I would be very pleased to see him in some public service position.
I think his father is Egyptian and his mother French. He was born in New York. He is a Muslim but says he does not believe in mixing religion with government. He’s a smart guy for sure.
“El-Erian” is jewish??? Like “Schumer” is jewish?????
Infiltration.
The central goal of ALL shia and sunni is the submission of all government to sharia law. That is dar es salaam - the peace of islam.
You might think it would be mass conversion - but it is not.
Therefore, EVERY shia and sunni muslim - no matter how ‘moderate’ - is the enemy of every other culture on the planet.
Period.
He says he does not believe in mixing religion and government.
He is lying to you kafir.
Who was most responsible for PIMCO’s success, Bill Gross or El-Erian?
Maybe he's not as smart as we thought!
He’s the bond king.
Bill Gross clearly. Due to his longevity. He built the company.
People like El-Erian for his judgement and temperament.
