The last year before the Super Bowl was 1966, the Packers won that one and the first Superbowl in 1967.

I think he is talking about the last NFL championship before the leagues merged. The 1966 championship was pre-Super Bowl era. When the Super Bowls started, there were still two separate leagues and no inter-league play. In 1970, the NFL and AFL merged into one league with two conferences. The last NFL championship before that merge is what he is referring to.

They didn’t merge until after the Vikings lost to KC. Up till then it was just an inter league game between the AFL champion and the NFL champion. The game between the champions of the NFL and the AFL was called the “AFL-NFL Championship Game”.

The games were to see if the AFL was good enough. They won two of them, Jets and KC both won. They proved they were good enough to compete, so they then merged the two leagues into one.

Now we have the American Conference and the National Conference one big league. The teams from both old leagues are now all mixed up between both conferences as one league.

Look into it, I know for which I speak. I watched them all as I kid. I remember the adults all claiming the AFL was a joke, especially after GB won the first two. Look who is laughing now. LOL

Anyway, the last official last NFL champion was the Minnesota Vikings. They defeated the Cleveland Browns, but then lost in the last inter league Championship game that was later called the Super Bowl. The game wasn’t officially named the Super Bowl until they merged and began using Roman Numerals to distinguish them apart. They did however retroactively rename the first 4 games as the fist four Super Bowls.

If you can find old game flyers you will see they do not have the word Super Bowl on them, they say They didn’t merge until after the Vikings lost to KC. Up till then it was just an inter league game between the AFL champion and the NFL champion. The game between the champions of the NFL and the AFL was either called the “AFL-NFL Championship Game”, or the “World Championship Game”.

That is why you don’t see any NFL champion playing any AFL champion in the Super Bowl anymore. We have the NFC champion playing the AFC champion to get the NFL champion.’t see any NFL champion playing any AFL champion in the Super Bowl anymore. We have the NFC champion playing the AFC champion.
