Road Trip: McAlester Army Ammunition Plant, Oklahoma

mcalester1

McAlester Army Ammunition Plant (MCAAP) is a weapons manufacturing facility in McAlester, Oklahoma, USA. Its mission is to produce and renovate conventional ammunition and ammunition related components. The plant stores war reserve and training ammunition.

McAlester performs manufacturing, industrial engineering, and production product assurance. The plant also receives, demilitarizes, and disposes of conventional ammunition components. The plant is government-owned and government-operated. It is located in Pittsburg County, Oklahoma, southwest of the city of McAlester.

MCAAP was established May 20, 1943 as the McAlester Naval Depot. It became part of the Army's Single Manager for Conventional Ammunition in 1977. After the 1995 Base Realignment and Closure Commission, it acquired Red River Munitions Center in 1999.

As a result of the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure Commission, MCAAP will be acquiring additional workload. From Kansas Army Ammunition Plant, it will acquire the Sensor Fuzed Weapon and missile warhead production.

From Red River Munitions Center, Lone Star Army Ammunition Plant, and Sierra Army Depot, it will acquire demilitarization, storage, and maintenance functions.

mcalester4

MCAAP is housed on 44,964 acres with 2,891 buildings, 2,426 igloos and storage capacity of 8,840,559 square feet.

An article in the February 24, 2011 issue of the Army Times announced that a ceremony was to be held to mark the opening of a new $17-million dollar, 54,000-square-foot (5,000 m2) armed forces reserve center for reserve component units, replacing old reserve centers and national guard armories in various locations that have been or are being converted to community centers or municipal buildings.

According to the article, "The McAlester facility has offices, classrooms, workout facilities, kitchens, and a 25,000-square-foot motor pool."

MCAAP is a government-owned/government-operated (GOGO) facility and is the Defense Department's premier bomb and warhead loading facility. It is one of 14 industrial facilities in the Joint Munitions Command, and is vital to ammunition stockpile management and delivery to the joint warfighter for training and combat operations.

Sounds nasty! It was drizzly here this morning but kind of cleared off later....but it was in the 60s and hardly any wind. Thank goodness.

We needed the moisture but don’t need “raw”.

I'm stuck at work, too....last minute project. *sigh*

They're making a habit of this sort of thing on Mondays, aren't they?
Enough to make the thoughts of retirement look better each time, huh? LOL!

Hi Kathy, we actually got into the 50's today but windy too, so we had sun and clouds intermittently.

Tuesday off and then back to work for 3 days.

I’m attempting to FReep a bit but have been distracted by Hubby’s cussing at the cats. He’s trying to swap out the kitchen faucet with a new one they can’t turn on and they’re trying to “help”. LOL

Today’s “adventure” was taking Avatar and Percy to the vet. Percy just needed his annual shots but Avatar is staying overnight so he’ll be there in the morning to have a bad tooth (maybe two) pulled. I’ll pick him up tomorrow afternoon.

I wish it were, too, so you could get Blue to his winter home and you and Penny could have a nice walk without freezing!

Howdy, radu!

Good to see you tonight! Hope the weather was nice there today. It was here. in the low 60s in the afternoon and misty this morning. I remembered in the middle of the night that I needed to go have bloodwork done, so that’s what I did. It took nearly 2 hours because everyone else had the same idea. LOL!

I treated hubby and myself to breakfast/lunch at McDonald’s afterward. We combined it because it was too late for one and almost time for the other. LOL!
