The night that Stephen Paddock opened fire on thousands of people at a Las Vegas country music concert, nearby Sunrise Hospital received more than 200 penetrating gunshot wound victims. Dr. Kevin Menes was the attending in charge of the ED that night, and thanks to his experience supporting a local SWAT team, hed thought ahead about how he might mobilize his department in the event of a mass casualty incident.
This is his story, as told to Judith Tintinalli, MD, MS Edited by Logan Plaster
Im a night shift doc. My work week is Friday to Monday, 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Most people dont want to work those shifts. But thats when most of the action comes in, so thats when I work. It was a Sunday night when the EMS telemetry call came in to alert Sunrise Hospital of a mass casualty incident. All hospitals in Las Vegas are notified in a MCI to prepare for incoming patients.
As I listened to the tele, there happened to be a police officer who was there for an unrelated incident. I saw him looking at his radio. I asked him, Hey. Is this real? and he said, Yeah, man. I ran down to my car and grabbed my police radio. The first thing that I heard when I turned it on to the area command was officers yelling, Automatic fire country music concert. Ten oclock at night at an open air concert, automatic fire into 10-20 thousand people or more in an open fieldthats a lot of people who could get hurt.
At that point, I put into action a plan that I had thought of beforehand. It might sound odd, but I had thought about these problems well ahead of time because of the way I always approached resuscitations:

"In the end, we officially had 215 penetrating gunshot wounds, but the actual number is much higher. As I would circle the ER looking for blood, I would hear the green tags say, You know what? Im not that badIll be fine. Over time, they would walk out without getting registered. Our true number was well over 250."
Starting to sound like there were more gunshot wounds than were originally reported.
8 GSWs to the chest
10 GSWs to the head
13 GSWs to the abdomen
17 Ortho GSWs
33 GSWs to the neck or major extremities
The article states, no sprained ankles, etc. Strictly gunshot wounds.
These Doctor’s should get a visit to see President Trump in the Whitehouse. Their story is truly heroic. They were treating 30 GSW per hour.
The American Media are pathetic. Biggest mass shooting ever in Las Vegas and they are silent.
This article needs to be shared far and wide. http://lvfishbarrel.com/the-las-vegas-fish-barrel-massacre-whats-not-wrong-with-this-picture/#comment-6
From the article linked above, This report is an attempt to address the truth of the Las Vegas fish barrel massacre by first putting the lie to so much we have been told. We will attempt to present contrary information to a bakers dozen and a half of the key elements of this story. We will provide some of the same links that informed our own inquiry so that the readers can retrace the steps we have taken which have brought us to our collective conclusion. Las Vegas was not the result of a crazed, lone gunman with access to too many weapons of mass murder. Instead, it was a well-planned and almost well executed false flag event, executed by numerous shooters above, around and within the concert crowd and abetted by official collusion and corporate media stupor. This time, however, unlike other pivotal events in our nations tortured history, the intended victims were well equipped with cell phones to document what really happened and to share that information quickly and deeply, despite the overly aggressive efforts of our shared social media platforms to sanitize our discussions. That didnt work, and it is not working still.
So join us as we review nineteen key disjointed elements in this tragic story. Read and watch the links we provide to inform and buttress your own impressions, opinions and conclusions. And then join the burgeoning mass movement to demand the truth about Las Vegas, and justice for all.
ED? Erectile Dysfunction?
Fascinating read - from a manufacturing/industrial viewpoint, the ER doctor was practicing Lean when he talks about managing flow. Putting the patients into beds that circled him like daisy petals is cellular manufacturing. Putting two patients on one ventilator with increased output is Single Minute Exchange of Dies.
Thanks for posting the article - I’ve put the link on my Facebook page for some friends who are paramedics.
Thanks. That was a wonderful article.
This is the best crisis management account I’ve ever read. Very compelling.
I just sent the article to some guys I co-lead a boys youth group with.
This doctor epitomized the concept of pre-planning yet making snap decisions to adapt, innovate and overcome.
As a leader, he also was not afraid to lead, even as far as telling the CEO where to place vital resources.
ED is what is used now instead of ER.
Miraculous
I cried.
Wow. A gripping article.
The doctor’s approach is something that can be translated to other potential situations. Pre-planning strategies and rehearsing actions in the mind can only be a positive thing. Churches should be discussing these issues now.
Bkmk
I am glad the article was appreciated. I have read/listened to so many reports from witnesses who SWEAR there was more than one shooter yet they aren’t being given any news coverage. There is more to this news story.
This is a REAL news story and notice how it wasn’t told by the media but by the Doctor who lived it?
Please read and share the above story about Las Vegas. Richard Ardito and others who were there are trying to tell the story of what happened to them but as far as the media goes, just crickets.
Can you imagine going through what these people went through and then having the story manipulated?
.
Hard to believe much of an article that begins with a proven falsehood:
>> “The night that Stephen Paddock opened fire on thousands of people at a Las Vegas country music concert...” <<
We already know that Paddock didn’t fire a single shot; he was meeting with the Saudis on a fake “Arms Deal.”
.
Wow. Thanks for posting.
“Instead, it was a well-planned...”
No it wasn’t. If it had been well planned there would of been many more dead and injured.
So over 500 doesn’t seem like a significant amount of carnage to you?
This wasn’t a concert full of young millennials who have never fired a gun or even heard one. Many of the people who were there are huge second amendment supporters, hunters, EMT’s, Police Officers, etc. Perhaps there wasn’t more loss of life because the people who were there took action to save lives and protect their loved ones as best they could while being “fish in a bowl.”
I am glad the article was appreciated.
= = = Dr. Menes was allowed to use ‘common sense’, a property that is ‘dissed’ in present times.
...and others who were there are trying to tell the story...
= = = A while back I read a post of a woman (I think at Mandalay Bay) who asked about the shooting there, and was told ‘there was no shooting’, then handed a room bill for $0.
Can you imagine going through what these people went through and then having the story manipulated?
= = = Red China, Soviet Union, Ukraine (’30s), Zimbabwe, Hitler’s Germany, ... What do these all have in common???
We did everything we could.
The author fully earned the right to make this statement.
I agree re the “common sense”. Unfortunately, I bet someone will sue because of some normal ER process that wasn’t followed. Damn shame that we have these lawyer vultures all over.
