I'm reading And Then You're Dead:. In the chapter about being attacked by a shark it's stated that if your leg is torn off, a ragged separation, the arteries are separated at an angle and you'll bleed out quickly. If they're cut through cleanly, think guillotine, the artery's natural tension pulls it into the remaining flesh which closes around it and stops, or, at least slows, the blood loss. Who knew?

I suspect Amtrak will settle given he was in plain view of the camera and they didn't stop to render aid.

"...the Coast Starlight train to Seattle – passed through at about 2:50 a.m. ..."

Amtrak engineers should not be expected to stare at a video screen for their entire shift.

Friend of mine grew up in a train town told me “everyone who grew up here knows someone who got killed on the tracks”.

Of course, lawsuits were filed against the railroad on the drunk guy’s behalf.

He doesn't have leg to...
Never mind

Responded to a report of man down on the RR right of way and found an adult male, severely intoxicated and missing his legs below the knees and both arms just above the wrists...

Apparently he had tried to hop a slow mover and fallen under the wheels, severing his legs...Then he attempted to reach for and grab his severed legs and lost both hands...

A freight car has a gross weight in vicinity of 300K lbs!

Crush injuries were so severe there was very little to no bleeding...

Cameras are employed to see what the train engineers see. They are essential, for example, in determining what the facts of a grade crossing accident are: Were the gates operating and did the vehicle go around them, did the engineer blow the horn, did he apply the brakes, etc.? There is no viewing screen; they simply record to be downloaded later as necessary.

They are probably IR cameras for night viewing too... Train tracks are not usually well lit.

So both your legs get cut off by a train, then you spend the entire night sleeping on one of them, how is it he didn’t bleed to death or die from shock?

Thanks. So at 2:30am, the engineer would have a hard time seeing someone passed out on the tracks.
