Developing world says rich nations shirking on climate

The failure of wealthy nations to deliver on short-term climate commitments could hinder the rollout of a landmark treaty, a bloc of 134 developing countries, including India and China, warned Thursday at UN negotiations in Bonn.

The diplomatic spat has underscored the difficulty of reaching a consensus at the 196-nation talks.

"If we do not respect decisions that we have made, then how can we build trust among the parties?" said Chen Zhihua, China's senior negotiator, referring to long-standing pledges by rich nations to enhance financial support and "revisit" targets for curbing greenhouse gas emissions before 2020.

"And how can we lay a good foundation for the implementation of the Paris Agreement?" he added.

Under the terms of the UN's core climate convention, the burden for action before 2020 falls mainly on wealthy countries historically responsible for the rapid rise of greenhouse gases.

China is the world's top carbon polluter, followed by the United States, the European Union, India and Russia.

"It would be a bad thing if this hangs over into the second week and becomes a political issue for ministers," said Alden Meyer, director of strategy and policy for the Union of Concerned Scientists in Washington DC.

"It has been a pretty sterile debate that has degenerated into a finger-pointing exercise," he told AFP.

-—Why is China a “developing nation”? They seem to have everything a “developed nation” has, and do all the things a “developed nation” does.-—

Because they are...

China has a small capitalist zone...small for a huge country

The rest of the country is pleasantry. Most of china does not have indoor plumbing...

Not surprised to see we all see the truth of this BS.

“The USA is not sending enough of their taxpayer’s dollars to us”.

America first, baby.

Has there ever been a developing nation that has become developed?

Ahh ... not to worry, there has been active volcanic activity below the Antarctic’s icecaps for TENS OF MILLIONS OF YEARS so we actually have nothing to worry about. Sometimes in the Antarctic, ice melts and, guess what, the ice-water refreezes after flowing a relatively short distance away.

OK, having posted the above logical and fact based words, I can now post my usual reaction to seeing such “alarmist” items....

...OH NOEEEO...WE’RE ALL GOING TO DIE!!!

I seem to recall that back around 1960 I heard people in the media using the term "backward countries" in reference to what are now called "developing countries"—i.e., countries that are not developing.

This was also back in the days when the phrase "culturally disadvantaged" was used to refer to what is now called "multicultural."

Anyone who can’t see through this ploy cannot say “wealth redistribution.”

This garbage is way past old.

It’s high time we start crashing their parties and sorting this out. Ignoring them doesn’t work. They’re already directly costing me over 5k a year in a carbon tax. Years ago I was entertained by their stupidity, now I’m just angry.

The Creepozoid Wackos have so destroyed the real meaning of words. Almost all life on Earth is carbon-based. CO2 is PLANT FOOD! I have a sign in my office that drives the creepozoids crazy ‘Large Carbon Footprints Make for Happy Trees.’ If they actually bother to discuss reality, I teach them the Carbon Cycle. I also teach them that the next Ice Age is coming, and nothing can be done to prevent it. Even if we started pumping as much CO2 as possible into the atmosphere, the Sun is getting cooler, less sunspots.
