Senate Tax Bill Would Kill SALT Deduction
Roll Call ^ | 11/09/2017 | Roll Call Staff

The Senate tax overhaul would fully repeal the state and local tax deduction, according to a GOP aide and senator.

Democrats were quick to pounce on the news, saying the House GOP’s move to allow some state and local tax deductions to stay for property taxes was just a fig leaf.

“The Republicans in the House thought they were throwing a few crumbs to members to get them to walk the plank,” House Minority Nancy Pelosi said of the House GOP plan to provide for a maximum $10,000 deduction for state and local property taxes. “That is not in the Senate bill.”

Lucky for us taxpayers - this Tax Reform Bill is DOA.

No chance - no way - this will ever make it out of Congress.

What the hell is wrong with the GOP?!

Every action they’ve taken is completely moronic as if they don’t want to lead and are throwing a temper tantrum because Trump won.

This Congressional nonsense needs to end. Why isn’t anyone talking about a single rate flat tax?

Perhaps the more they push this so called “reform” bill, the more people will see it as the joke it really is.

And then revolt and demand a Fair Tax.

(And yes, I know I’m dreaming and that it’ll never happen.)

In this case, Pelosi and Schumer are correct. Even the White House acknowledges that the Senate version is the one that will prevail in conference. This means that millions of middle class taxpayers are going to get soaked. House GOP members who are tweeting how great their version is and how they saved the day are liars

Where is Trump’s leadership on this? He asked for a massive tax cut for corporations......and then just left the scene. Congress has made this bill a poison pill for millions of us.

Dear Lord, are these people really this incompetent and stupid? They can’t fund the wall. They can’t repeal ObamaCare. They can’t confirm scores of Conservative judges. But they raise our taxes?!

Because in order to bring in the same revenue, they would need to make the flat rate of ~ 20%, and that would result in tax hike on most of the middle class.

“No chance - no way - this will ever make it out of Congress.”

I might.

I’d say there’s at least a 50-50 chance it hits POTUS desk.

The Chamber of Commerce and K Street are in the drivers seat here.

No can do. Russia has a flat tax rate. The media will say that Trump and Putin colluded on “the plan” while President Trump was on his Asian trip.

“Senate tax bill will likely keep mortgage and medical expense deductions, per Sen. Tim Scott”

that’s rich.

The Mortgage Deduction is capped at mortgages of 500K.

And the medical deduction only applies to expenses over 10% of your gross income.

Given the standard deduction, both are worthless.
