Despite the horrific mass shootings in Orlando, San Bernardino, and Newtown, among others, where semi-automatic rifles were used, only 36% of Americans support banning such weapons, a percentage that is down from 44% in 2012 and 57% in 1996, according to Gallup, which conducted the latest survey. In addition, 61% of Americans totally oppose such a ban.
A semi-automatic rifle, which the media often refer to as an "assault weapon," is a gun that fires one bullet each time the trigger is pulled. The Las Vegas shooter, Stephen Paddock, used semi-automatic rifles but he also reportedly modified them with "bump stocks," which allows one to pull the trigger faster.
"The fewest Americans in 20 years favor making it illegal to manufacture, sell, or possess semi-automatic guns known as assault rifle rifles," said Gallup.
In the survey, conducted Oct. 5-9, Gallup asked, "Are you for or against a law which would make it illegal to manufacture, sell or possess semi-automatic guns known as assault rifles?" 36% said they are for such a ban and 61% said they against it.
Broken down politically, the survey showed that 50% of Democrats support banning semi-autos, 31% of Indepentents support a ban, and 25% of Republicans.
For people who own guns, only 26% support a ban on semi-automatic rifles. For people who don't own guns, only 45% support a ban.
In addition to the question of rifles, only 23% of Americans favor a ban on handguns, which is down from 26% in 2011 and 36% in 2004, reported Gallup

We had public recourse for the liars and libelers too.
That is the U.S. legal definition of a “machine gun”.
A gun that fires more than one cartridge per pull of the trigger.
Technologically, there are burst fire guns that fire three shot bursts (not really machine guns), such as the M16-A2 and later variants.
There are machine pistols, that can fire until the magazine is empty.
There are sub-machine guns that fire from the shoulder, same as above (pistol calibers).
There are automatic rifles and assault rifles, which are rifle sized guns that fire same as above.
Then come various full sized machine guns.
Then ganged machine guns like the quad 50 (four M2 machine guns fired simultaneously from one mount).
Then automatic cannon.
I have been repenting and praying.
Before and after the election.
That 36% needs to move to a country where they feel safer, like China or Cuba for example.
Only those who do nothing never make mistakes.
Doing nothing is the biggest mistake of all.
No problems.

I hear Venezuela is nice this time of year...
It has extremely strong gun control.
Didn’t the ‘93 win ‘Best Supporting Actor’ in Bullitt?
Of course you could have meant the 1893 Marlin lever rifle. They made a neat .30/30 musket version that came with a bayonet.
Too bad Marlin cannot come up with a reproduction one today.
Which would indicate to me that Americans no longer believe the system can guarantee their safety. We’ve got refujihadis and “lone woofs” running around all over the country and the government thinks we should be unarmed. I don’t thinks so.
36% — That’s about the right number for hard-core Hussein Heads who would put Hitler in office if he had a D at the end.
Well, they sure tried last year, anyway.
Doesn’t matter. It’s a second amendment RIGHT guaranteed by people who own GUNS.
As have I mark, as have I. Daily I seek forgiveness of my many blunders of the day.
The reason for the decrease of those in favor of an assault weapons ban are likely two fold. In 1994 not that many people owned a tactical rifle. Now they are one of the most popular weapons and everybody and their dog owns one or five. Second too many people fear CW11 is on the horizon.
[Other than machine guns, don’t all guns fire one bullet each time the trigger is pulled? (when working properly)]
Man, many years ago they were correctly referred to as “self-loaders”.
Or “Ottermagic” if you were from central or northern FL. (grin)
That cartoon reminds me of another one from forty nine years ago. A Bill Mauldin cartoon. A lynch mob is hanging a firearm from a noose. In the back of the mob a criminal says...”They lynched my gun and let ME go!”
The lever action rifle was the a-s-s-ault rifle of the 1870s. Bourke, in his book ON THE BORDER WITH CROOK mentions the Indian tribes became very surly when they obtained good magazine rifles. Yet, after they wiped out Custer, no one demanded a ban on such rifles.
gun bans are the brainchild of 1900s communists.
As gun sales have climbed, violent crime rates have declined.
That’s an inconvenient fact for the gun-grabbers.
Bills such as this are considered only if allowed by leadership in the majority party.
36% of Americans wanting to ban Semi-Auto is the same percentage who would vote for a democrat candidate that publicly molested a child on-stage then sacrificed said child to Baal on live prime-time.
ONLY 36%???
