Opera released an overhaul of its browser today, and claims to have grown its market share substantially in the year since it was acquired by a Chinese private equity company a year ago.
...
Golden Brick capital completed the acquisition a year ago. Its website explains: "The Group is focused on investments in China, Russia and other countries and regions of 'One belt, One Road' area to maximize return for investors and meanwhile dedicate to the national strategy and economic development."

The gist of the article is that, outside of the U.S., there are a couple of billion people who don't seem to care which nation's government has back doors into their computers. This vast market—known as the "One Belt, One Road" (a.k.a. "Belt and Road")—is of both economic and political concern. I posted a related article on this a few minutes ago:
In Japan, Trump and Abe Offer Alternative to Chinas Belt and Road
I liked Opera several years ago, but its utility and compatibility with several websites I frequent kept falling off, and I ended up just dumping it altogether about 16 months ago.
I use Firefox and Brave most of the time, and IE the rest of the time. I utterly LOATHE MS’ “Edge”.
China owns it? I didn’t know that. I’ll have to find something else.
First Chrome (Google), now this.
Sometimes my copy of Brave just won’t open.
Do business owners have no sense of nationality, or do they only think of $$$?
Why would any American sell a business to a nation that is our sworn enemy.
The desire to make money isn't good enough to justify such an action, IMO.
Then it's Commie vs. Commie.
There are no PRIVATE Chinese companies. They are all either fronts for the Central Government or owned and operated by apparatchiks of the government. They are a Communist/Fascist hybrid slave state that relies almost exclusively on technology theft, market manipulation, unlimited low cost/slave labor and product flooding to control markets.
We should have never allowed them Most Favored Nations status or admission into the WTO without requiring a democratic form government. We have sold them the rope that they will use to hang us. We can thank the Clinton, Bush, Obama Cabal for China's ascension and AMerica's decline.
Opera was from Norway, land of the Nobel Peace Prizes.
Putting money before country is a unforgivable screw-up in my book.
Im just searching unsuccessfully for a browser that will allow you to see in full on a phone what you are posting on FR. FR needs an app.
A few years ago when I was shopping for a new phone, not a single saleman could show me one with a browser that could "linearize" a web page and reformat it for the small screen. The only browser that worked was one none of the salesmen had heard of—Opera Mini. I ended up getting a flip-phone.
wow...I’ve been an Opera user since the beginning....I paid for it and help tested it. Back then, if fit on a floppy and you “could” run it off a floppy.
I just haven’t been paying attention. I was a little miffed when the engine went to Chrome but so be it. (I’ve still got an 11.x version that is slowly becoming undone.)
I wasn’t aware it was bought by the Chinese.
Looks like I will be dumping it...maybe.
I’ve been using SlimJet more and more.
I actually like MS EDGE also.
For years I used Opera on my phone because it was the only one that would let you see FR properly, then as stated above, the compatibility started to drop off.
However, I went back to a previously used browser that has so many features it’s a bit intimidating: iCab by Alexander Clauss.
I actually started using it originally because it was the only browser that worked well on my NEWTON! Now it’s the only one that works well on my iPhone.
On Android, I use Waterfox and Bromite (the latter is Chromium with ad blocking), on Linux use mostly Waterfox. Pale Moon started having some compatibility problems. Occasionally do check Opera to see what’s new.
Bromite is not in the Play Store so you’ll have to search for it but it is worth the effort if you sometimes need a “Chrome” with ad blocking on Android.
