Not long ago, Bonos trendy anti-poverty lobby group, One, launched a blistering public attack on secretive foreign tax havens that allow very rich people to squirrel away their wealth.
At a press conference in Brussels, where MEPs were debating new anti money-laundering laws, it sternly declared that tax havens were preventing massive sums from being spent on the all-important fight against extreme poverty, disease, and hunger.
Anonymous shell companies and trusts [are] often being used to siphon much-needed funds out of developed and developing countries alike, added a spokesman for Bonos organisation, claiming that theyre costing the Third World the staggering sum of a trillion dollars each year.
Calling for anonymous trusts and companies to be abolished, the spokesman said: Knowing who really owns and controls these entities would go a long way to follow the money and root out corruption. Wise words, one might think. And ones that will certainly have struck a chord with the multi-millionaire Irish pop star who founded One in 2004, with support from friends such as Bill Gates and Bob Geldof, to campaign on behalf of the dispossessed.
For yesterday, it emerged that 57-year-old Bono is actually something of an expert on strangely named shell companies which are secretly set up in tax havens in order to help very rich people avoid tax.
Indeed, this globe-trotting voice of conscience happens to have been a director and major shareholder in one which was yesterday revealed to be the subject of a formal investigation by tax authorities.
The organisation goes by the name of Nude Estates and, according to the so-called Paradise Papers, it was incorporated in Malta roughly ten years ago in order to help him invest in the Lithuanian property market.

2banana’s Rule:
Conservatives are more than happy to live under the same laws and taxes they want for everyone else.
Liberals/progressives expect to exempted from the laws and taxes they want for everyone else.
The exposure of leftist hypocrisy is a relief to the good common folks who live and work hard in America. The idolatries of the Godless left, when exposed to the cleansing of truth and light, seem to be on the brink of the “domino” effect and I hope it continues. We can thank the election of Donald Trump for this. If Hillary had been elected, America would have been finished.
Bono is a preening, bloviating, moralizing asshat.
Thanks Oshkalaboomboom.

rats beget rats, this criminal op is perfectly legal for the rats and illegal for anyone else
I see some soccer players have been in trouble with taxes as well; I don’t assume they’re guilty, but think it is more likely very complicated when you earn your money in various countries. Here in the US, teams like the Yankees have their spring training in states with no income tax (FL); they are only liable for NY taxes for games they play in NY (as I understand it).
“At this stage, it should be stressed Bono has not been accused of breaking any laws.”
Nope, he’s just a sanctimonious Progressive knob. But I repeat myself.

I still am amazed anyone listens to the crap u2 plays. It is just whining in 4 notes.
The tax havens are popular because of the insane level of taxes that apply to high income people.
Get the taxes down in the 25% range at the top levels, and funds in the tax havens will shrink.
agreed, I always thought U2 was supposed to be some kind of parody band....
That clip of Bono and Peter (Family Guy) adrift on a raft with food, and Bono insisting the food is for the starving children pretty much nails Bono.
i hate that band! and REM. talk about whining...

Legal privacy.
Where ever a professional athlete plays a game, the athlete is subject to the tax authority of the location where the game was played and income earned.
This is hardly new information. I’ve read about Bono’s offshore accounts for well over 10 years now.
Bono has been a tax avoider for many years. The release of the Paradise papers gives a more detailed look into how far he and many others went to avoid those taxes.
As I understand it, “artists” in Ireland don’t pay any taxes.
