I see some soccer players have been in trouble with taxes as well; I don’t assume they’re guilty, but think it is more likely very complicated when you earn your money in various countries. Here in the US, teams like the Yankees have their spring training in states with no income tax (FL); they are only liable for NY taxes for games they play in NY (as I understand it).

Where ever a professional athlete plays a game, the athlete is subject to the tax authority of the location where the game was played and income earned.
