When he was attending Catholic University of America, Ed Gillespie worked three jobs, one in a campus dining hall, one as a short-order cook and one parking cars at the U.S. Senate.
Through the job as a parking lot attendant, Gillespie learned of an internship opportunity that led to a job on Capitol Hill, and he has not stopped working in politics and public affairs since.
Gillespie, communications ace, former lobbyist and senior aide to President George W. Bush, will find out Tuesday if Virginia voters will send a Reagan conservative to the Virginia governors mansion in the era of Donald Trump.
Should Gillespie succeed, he would become the first Republican elected statewide in Virginia since Bob McDonnell led his partys sweep of statewide offices in 2009. He would likely have a GOP-controlled legislature to pass a broad agenda of bills he could sign into law.
Job creation, getting Virginia growing again, is central to my campaign, Gillespie said in an interview Thursday. I truly think we should be first in the country. ... Ive been talking about this from day one.
The race between Gillespie and Democratic Lt. Gov. Ralph Northam is considered close. Hillary Clinton beat Donald Trump by 5.3 percentage points in Virginia in November, but with lower turnout expected in this years governors race, Gillespie has given hope to Republicans.
This is Gillespies second run for statewide office in Virginia, after narrowly losing to U.S. Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., in a low turnout 2014 election.

Fine, then PRIMARY him in next election if pressure put on him while he serves should fail.
The worst RINO is STILL better than any Liberal.
In VA, the governor is term limited to one 4 year term.
Or he is lying more boldly.......
Ed Gillespie is a nice Catholic guy. I don’t for one second believe he is a liar. Sorry.
I didn’t know that, thank you.
It’s a great idea (term limits)
I just returned from voting, I was glad to vote for Whitlock, Vogel and Adams, I have to shower after voting for Gillespie.
I still feel like I need a shower after voting for him.
Some Republicans will be lined up at the ABC stores today - LOL!
Just think how exciting it will be to work on Corey Stewart’s campaign! :^)
True - but when it comes to politics the lesser of two evils can still be a lot better than the greater evil. If we insist on never going with the lesser (in politics anyway) the greater wins every time and we have 60 years or so of experience to help understand what that means for our Freedoms.
Like the Germans in the 20s-30s? Yeah, that's a great strategy.
Nope, not gonna take it any more...we've tried it your way for 30 years.
Here's a better idea: throw out the first few RINOs to let the idiots know that "We the People" won't take it any more. That tightens the sphincters of the remaining RINOs. They learn that they can't throw sh!t sandwiches down our throats anymore.
It hurts for a couple of election cycles, but they get the message.
Or, you can keep voting for the "lesser of two evils" and continue accepting their sh!t sandwiches.
And what could they have done that would have made it better? Don't forget there was also a lot of international intervention going on. I fail to see how that is a relevant argument to our own current situation. When the dictator-backing left will do anything to gain even the merest part of an inch, we are compliant if we will not do the same to keep them from it or to try to gain a bit for our side.
Oh wait! I just checked your profile - you're not even a Virginia resident!
Dammit! Go away! Stop preaching to us Virginians!
I know one lurker is from Texas, and here's another from Mississippi!
Spoken like one who thinks his internal fantasies are reality - seem to have bitten into your own sandwich.
Talked with other Virginians who agree with me - with folks like you on our side Hillary would be President now and you’d be justifying it.
LOL! A Senator from any State affects all the others - you propose ditching Gillespie for the Democrap - and you think we're punking you - dream on sunshine....
Do something useful to put your money where your foot is...
or join one of them other sites where it's standard procedure to let others carry your water while you spout off ...
