I am amazed. Is this a military court or some night court in New York City. Since when has the judge such freedom to weigh extenuating circumstances?
“Judge, the corporal spit in the Sergeant’s soup.” Corporal: “I was having a bad day;.”
Judge: “Oh, that’s all right, report back to duty.”
Every JAG lawyer for a F-u and deserter in the military will now be able to use the Berghdal excuse.

Seems like all Trump did was to offer counterpoint to Obama and crew declaring him an honorable hero......why didn’t Obama and company’s comments make the “judge” want to increase the penalty so he could decrease it (instead of waiving it) due to trump’s comments? And the “judge” said he just wanted to “be fair”.....

Brigham Young implies Mormon anti-Trumpism was the rationale for the punted sentence. The judge was quoted in a NY Time article as saying he had to take in account the Presidents statements about the traitor Bergdahl when he would hand down the sentence.
In other words, letting Bergdahl skate was a big FU to Trump.

So Bergdahl leaves his unit to collude with the enemy and is given a slap on the wrist. What a precedent. Unfortunately for Bergdahl, he will have to live a public life as a traitor. Soldiers are everywhere in our society. Poor Bergdahl is going to wish for peison before long.
