Rep. Scott Taylor: Bowe Bergdahl should go to prison -- years ago he could have faced a firing squad
FoxNews.com ^ | November 4, 2017 | Rep. Scott Taylor

Posted on 11/04/2017 9:55:13 AM PDT by Kaslin

Like many Americans, I was upset by the decision by a military judge Friday to not give a prison sentence to Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl for desertion, misbehavior before the enemy and endangering our own troops.

I'm disappointed for all the troops who continue to uphold their sacred honor to our country and to the men and women on their left and right in places around the globe.

Bergdahl willingly walked off his Army base in Afghanistan in 2009 and was held captive by the Taliban for five years. A tremendous amount of military and other assets were brought to bear to find the missing soldier, because he is an American and that is what we do.

Bergdahl’s ideological agenda, his selfishness and his actions led to soldiers being wounded and killed as they searched for him. Many lives were forever altered.

Airplanes, guns, special forces, and soldiers were diverted from fighting a war to look for Bergdahl. Military members in other parts of Afghanistan had to potentially go without air cover or ground back-up while the search unfolded.

Make no mistake about it: in earlier times this desertion on a battlefield would have most likely resulted in a firing squad. While this is no longer the case, the penalty for Bergdahl’s crimes must be a harsh one.

Upholding the crucial element of trust between brothers and sisters in arms is a fundamental part of military discipline. The men and women of our military need to have the utmost confidence in those who serve beside them. No matter how hot, cold, wet, tired, or hungry they are, they will give their all, possibly even giving their own lives to see the mission through.

This JAG punk is nothing more than a 2 bit lawyer who figured it was more lucrative to put on a uniform than chase ambulances.

This should have been handled by a board of officers. b-dal could have gotten more severe punishment via field grade Art 15.

It’s a shame and a disgrace that they changed it.

I recall cases when verdicts would not go as liberals wanted so they, in essence, ignored double jeopardy and subjected defendants to federal charges and a federal trial after a state trial. In fact, it became a strategy to file federal charges and then await the state case. Los Angeles police brutality cases come to mind. So perhaps Bergdahl should face civil charges, if we were being consistent. (Yes, I know. Not going to happen.)

I thoroughly understand the sentiment about sending him to prison.
I would trade his complete (and unjustified) exoneration (indeed, I’d let him have a medal for his cowardly conduct! imagine that!) if....if....if we could get a genuine trial and conviction, I am sure, for SorozNazi, HilLIARy, Pelousy, and Obammy.

Yes, he got off pretty light, but at least he was tried and convicted and punished in certain ways. The BIGGER criminals, responsible for LOTS more corpses, seem to always go free??????

there is a reason why some ghetto dwellers riot about “injustice”.................they see many smaller folks ...guilty and innocent....getting hit by arrests and prosecutions and prison sentences...........sometimes for stealing a pack of beer or a pizza...............while mass-murdering traitors that make illegal wars and cause thousands to die, stay free

there IS a lack of justice in USA.
the rioters, damnit, do have a point.

why isn’t obammy in Guantanamo?
why is HilLIARY allowed to keep the reported $200 million she took from her Muslim bff dictators ?
why is Soroz, of all the evil people ever born or hatched, why is that basturd allowesd to keep the money and still remain free/

just a question. and no, I don’t want to let the others off either. please please nobody email or post or flame me about that. I am only citing them as worthwhile comparisons for how our justice system, socalled works. I have witnessed a full scale prosecution for a kid with a cigarette containing that wrong kind of weed. a two week trial. for a garbage offense. and Soroz remains free!?
please please Donald Trump, please Drain as much of the Swamp as you possibly Can, as soon as you can. Let’s all help Donald MAGA! Thanks!

Do you have to call that arrogant pos former occupant of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue "Obammy"?

It sounds like an endearment and I wished you'd stop it. Thanks

Ok. O’Bozo it is then. With an occasional O’Guantanamo. Call it wishful thinking.

I will consider the president's comments as mitigation evidence as I arrive at an appropriate sentence,” the judge, Col. Jeffery R. Nance said.

This was an Army 0-6 who decided to stick it to President Trump.

How dare the President have an opinion on Bergdahl the traitor?

Colonel Nance let Bergdahl go free as a big FU to Trump. Period.
