Papa John's says anthem protests are hurting deal with NFL

Executives from Papa John's, the official pizza company of the NFL, expressed disappointment on a conference call Wednesday about the league's ongoing player protests during the national anthem.

"The NFL has hurt us," company founder and CEO John Schnatter said. "We are disappointed the NFL and its leadership did not resolve this."

Executives said the company has pulled much of its NFL television advertising and that the NFL has responded by giving the company additional future spots.

"Leadership starts at the top and this is an example of poor leadership," Schnatter said, noting he thought the issue had been "nipped in the bud" a year and a half ago.

In revising sales estimates for the next quarter, Papa John's president and chief operating officer Steve Ritchie said on the call that the NFL deal was the primary suspect behind the decline and that "we expect it to persist unless a solution is put in place."

The NFL should pull off the band-aid quickly and get this over with...

Players will NEVER be satisfied with anything short of abolishing all police departments and having owners grovel before them. Owners are starting to look like scared teenage girls and the kneelers like thugs. The bad news for the NFL is giving the school bully your lunch money doesn’t work...

Tell them to stand for the Anthem or get fired - man up NFL owners.

Since the NFL players said they will not stand for the anthem or respect our great country I have tried to avoid buying from those who advertise with the NFL.

Papa Johns is one company I will no longer buy from.

No brainer, Papa John’s.
Cease sponsoring the NFL.
I won’t be buying any of your pizza or foods until you do.
There’s always Little Ceasar’s as a replacement.

“The NFL will give Pappa Johns more spots.”

Not sure that 20% more ads to 80% of the audience produces the same number of pizza sales.

My point was “might” and that would only present itself IF they did bolt. As a veteran of the middle east and son of a two tour Korea and Viet Nam. They can kiss my mostly German heritage arsche! Maybe even better, the rest of my heritage is south western Georgia and I’ll take the line from Doc Holiday played by Dennis Quaid in Wyatt Earp.

I keep saying this, so at the risk of sounding boring, I'll repeat it again on this thread:

I challenge anyone who for whatever reason - boycott, time conflicts, you name it - has missed watching (m)any NFL games this season, to sit down and attempt to watch a (portion of) game.

I predict you won't last 5 minutes; NFL football is simply insufferable. It is (has become) increasingly boring, with an incredible amount of interruptions that disturb the flow and pace the game. Whether lackadaisical play, penalties, reviews, and/or frequent commercial breaks, it is impossible to hold any functioning person's attention.

This is the real effect of the push-back: a nation of virtual zombies has seemingly broken the spell. It took generations of programming to take hold, nurtured on dramatics and sporting heroics. But then the league changed the formula hoping no one would notice. Sure, small pockets of resistance were forming in various fields, but overall the threat was minimal.

Now, the NFL could start all over, but all the theatrics, all the false signalling, all the nonsense would have to first be stripped away. The WLB WS is an absolute great example of what sporting entertainment should be: athletic drama at its finest.

Bonus question: anyone else with wife/SO who typically has no interest in sports, but has been (weirdly) following the WS with avid interest? I'm wondering when this phenomenon will begin to be discussed.

Yes, what you said.

Not the best factory pizza but they’ll get my business if they lose the NFL.

We are at “peak football.”

on Saturday, I counted 20 different college games on my standard cable TV package during the afternoon. The NFL wants max exposure also on Thursday, all day Sunday and Monday evening. Then there is ESPN and their non-stop football discussion. I was completely maxed-out on football time years ago

Then along came Kaepernick and the tone-deaf, crony capitalist Goodell revealed to the world, and that was the last push I needed to replace the NFL in my schedule.

My wife hasn’t been a fan but is watching the WS. Same goes with me but it’s because the Astros are in it. But I suspect lots of former NFL viewers are watching.

“Eff the NFL. they are dead to me. A new football organization is primed to succeed. Pay attention potential billionaire owners. The time is ripe.”

Dollars to donuts Trump would be all over this opportunity if he wasn’t in office.

Of course if he wasn’t in office, the opportunity would likely never presented itself.

I was thinking about that this morning. With NFL attendance and viewership down, it has ripple effects on businesses...sports bars, pizza places, etc.

These overpaid NFL crybabies are hurting hard-working Americans.

From Iowahawk (a few weeks ago):

Trump makes stupid tweet

NFL overreacts, loses half its fans

NFL panics, overcorrects, loses remaining fans

Trump restarts the USFL
