White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders dismissed questions from the media about White House Chief of Staff Gen. John Kellys comments about the Civil War.
When asked by reporters if the White House thought that the comments were offensive, Sanders replied No.
Because you dont like history, doesnt mean that you can erase it and pretend that it didnt happen, she said. I think thats the point that General Kelly was trying to make, and to try to create something and push a narrative that simply doesnt exist is just, frankly, outrageous and absurd.
Kelly said in an interview with Laura Ingraham that he believed it was wrong to judge historical figures by modern standards, and defended Civil War general Robert E. Lee as an honorable man.

The blockade cut off most of the cotton exports and cut the south's access to hard currency.
The south thought that England and France would eventually come to the south's aid because they needed the cotton. And the south thought that New England would crash without the southern cotton for their mills.
The Union troops were into the south's cotton fields by 1862 and the New England mills had more cotton than they needed and were exporting the extra to Europe. England and France saw the Civil War coming so they had loaded up and had a very large inventory of cotton. India and Egypt ramped up cotton production quickly
Nobody in Virginia grew cotton then. Tobacco maybe.
Maybe in the liberal bubble you live in.
So the League of the South and some other groups planned an event in Murfreesboro last weekend but the counter demonstrators turned out in such large numbers they had to cut it short.
And about a week before that there was the event in Florida with Spencer and the countering groups came out in huge numbers.
But if you are just hanging around free republic participating in the collective denial, you're probably going to be OK.
