Sarah Sanders Shuts Down Civil War Controversy: You Cannot Erase History Just Because

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders dismissed questions from the media about White House Chief of Staff Gen. John Kelly’s comments about the Civil War.

When asked by reporters if the White House thought that the comments were “offensive,” Sanders replied ‘No.”

“Because you don’t like history, doesn’t mean that you can erase it and pretend that it didn’t happen,” she said. “I think that’s the point that General Kelly was trying to make, and to try to create something and push a narrative that simply doesn’t exist is just, frankly, outrageous and absurd.”

Kelly said in an interview with Laura Ingraham that he believed it was wrong to judge historical figures by modern standards, and defended Civil War general Robert E. Lee as an “honorable man.”

The south followed the King Cotton theory into the Civil War and were wrong. The original 7 states to secede were very, very dependent on the cotton exports and the hard currency.

The blockade cut off most of the cotton exports and cut the south's access to hard currency.

The south thought that England and France would eventually come to the south's aid because they needed the cotton. And the south thought that New England would crash without the southern cotton for their mills.

The Union troops were into the south's cotton fields by 1862 and the New England mills had more cotton than they needed and were exporting the extra to Europe. England and France saw the Civil War coming so they had loaded up and had a very large inventory of cotton. India and Egypt ramped up cotton production quickly

Nobody in Virginia grew cotton then. Tobacco maybe.

Actually I was talking about Murfreesboro TN, but that is the most recent place where the conflicts over this and related issues have arisen. It has been happening fairly frequently in many places but I wasn't paying much attention until those events in Charlottesville VA last August.

So the League of the South and some other groups planned an event in Murfreesboro last weekend but the counter demonstrators turned out in such large numbers they had to cut it short.

And about a week before that there was the event in Florida with Spencer and the countering groups came out in huge numbers.

But if you are just hanging around free republic participating in the collective denial, you're probably going to be OK.
