We’ll have to take it up with Jeff Foxworthy. Get yourself a good lawyer.

Still wrong.

Clearly wrong, yes...

My comment was repeating (and, mocking) what was being said AT THAT TIME in the local NYC media.

They were in quite a rush to say it was just a "road rage" incident.. NOT terrorism

Who did that?

As an avid cyclist myself, I find no sport in it.

Yeah - I hear there are a lot of rednecks in Seattle running down cyclists.

Well, when I bike commuted there, I almost bought it from a redneck truck driver that, for all intents and purposes, tried to run me down. But who knows if he was really a redneck. It’s just a label.

Dumba$$ post of the day. Fyi, I have to pay gas taxes to maintain roads and license/registration $ to have my vehicle legal on the road. Do the a$$hole cyclists pay the same fees for their traffic clogging bikes?

Many of them don’t. But most of them have cars and they do pay for those roads with all sorts of taxes.

That being said, there is not enough time to share the complexities of my viewpoints on this but suffice it to say I can, by sharing my viewpoints in small bites, irritate and please both bicycling advocates and those that want them off the road. It’s why, as a member of the Cascade bicycle club back in the day, I got into some heated arguments with the club president.

Jesus. You live in KY. Many fine people in the South do not consider Redneck a bad term.

I pride myself on being a redneck. :)

But I think of a different definition when I say that. When I use the word derogitorily, I’m referring to a characteristic that can be quite negative, but actually applies to a lot of folks that are not technically rednecks. And it ticks them off when I refer to them as rednecks, and even more when I explained why I used the term.

It’s a bit like calling a KKK memeber a n****r. And when you look at the multiple meanings of the word, some of them really are exactly that.

I’ve talked to a lot of rednecks about bicyclists. My comment comes from deep knowledge. But again, I put quite a few meanings behind the word, “redneck”. I can see, from the responses I’m getting, that it is the wrong word to use here and for this particular situation. Unfortunately there is no &*$**&%#@* edit function on this archaic site. :)

Sheesh, I’ve hit a nerve with a lot of people here.

I’d be glad to take it back. Unfortunately there is no edit feature on this site. In fact, I’m going to just have to refer all who complained about my usage of that word to this post.

Dear everyone. It was a poor choice of words. It popped into my head because, as a bicyclist myself, the only guys that ever intentionally tried to run me off the road or intentionally throw tacks in front of a bunch of cyclists looked and acted an awful lot like “rednecks”. I am a redneck myself and talk to a lot of rednecks. When it comes to bicyclists, I’m in the minority in the redneck community. And there are rednecks everywhere, even in Hollywood.

The term derives its meaning from the person using the word. In the future, if you find yourself being offended by someone using the word, before you get your panties in a wad, ask them to share with you what they meant by the word. You may be surprised by what you hear/read.

Words have meaning, but on a FORUM that does not allow editing of posts, you may want to take them with a grain of salt and keep your emotions in check before responding, until you can be sure what you are inferring is what the poster actually meant.

Thank you.

Two things:
I’m a bicyclist AND a redneck.
It most jurisdictions it is illegal to ride a bicycle on the sidewalk. They are required to ride on the road.

I’m with you regarding rude bicyclists, btw. Bicyclists are like drivers of cars - there are good ones and bad ones.

I firmly agree. It used to really tick me off, as one of the riders in those packs, when guys would blatantly hog the lane. And as a pedestrian I like to get across the street as fast as possible to avoid impeding traffic. For me, it is all about traffic flow, whether I’m on a bike, in my car, or on foot. And rudely impeding traffic in any of those situations is inappropriate.

Oh -
Why is it bicyclists wanted to be treated as vehicles except at stop signs and stop lights????????

As both a driver and a cyclist I can tell you why.

Howver, now that I live in a rural area, I can say I’m living the dream regarding stop signs and traffic lights with both my bicycle AND my cars. :)

I pay a tax (license and registration) for every vehicle I own. Cyclists pay no such tax. In this case I am all for “pay to play.”

When I get to you, I just wish I could reach the passenger door and open it and knock you off the road.
There are ample bike paths and none of them have people who need to get to work. They are like you.
I was born a redneck, its a matter of pride

Two things:
1. It wasn’t me.
2. Your post touches on the spirit of why I used the word “redneck”.

Thing is, if a car does something stupid, holding up traffic, you don’t say “stupid car drivers” because, well, you’re probably driving one. Of course, if you are a truck driver, you actually might say that. Bicyclists are like car drivers, they come in all types. Same with truck drivers and motorcyclists, of which I am both as well.
