egislation to ban bump stocks and other devices that allow guns to fire more rapidly was rejected by the Illinois House on Thursday, as opponents from both parties contended the measure was too broad and could turn legal gun owners into criminals.
State Rep. Marty Moylan, D-Des Plaines, said the bill was designed in response to the mass shooting in Las Vegas, where the gunman used bump stocks to increase the rate of fire on several semi-automatic rifles.
Today we are taking the first step towards better protecting our loved ones and preventing this horrific violence from happening in Illinois, Moylan said.
But opponents, including Rep. Jerry Costello, a Democrat from Downstate Smithton, called the bill too far-reaching because it would ban any modification that accelerates the rate of fire such as changing a spring or replacing a trigger.

Unmitigated Bullshit!!
Common sense in Illinoise? Go figure....
As one who lives in downstate (red) Illinois, everything is an ongoing battle between the Chicago liberal democrats and the rest of us.
Consider the Trump vs. Hillary red-blue map, except make the urban blue areas about 50% stronger than the red.
They probably did not reject bump stock ban but all the other regulations and bans added into the bill. People are no longer this stupid....at least half of the US is not.
Anyone with an ounce of brains could carve one out of wood.
I live in a far northern suburb of Chicago, about 10 miles from the Cheddar Curtain. Many people do not realize the sheer size of Illinois, especially north/south, nor do they understand the political diversity of the state. I was involved years ago with the Illinois State Rifle Association And was sending out promotional kits for local gun shows. I had dealings with a club in the Quad Cities area. This was a union area so they were avowed Democrats but any mention of gin control and may God have mercy on your political soul.
I didnt realize there was a blue moon out.
Bi-partisan rejection of the bump stock bab is a rare moment of sanity in the Illinois legislature. The bill was badly written so the ban would apply to many accessories, not just bump stocks, to end up making a lot of innocent gun owners statutory criminals.
Illinois must have one of those invisible barriers around the state that can detect a bump stock being brought in from another state.
“..but any mention of gin control..”
People must love their liquor in Illinois.
