Four hundred sixty nine different plaintiffs in two class-action lawsuits over Obama-era IRS harassment settled with the Department of Justice Thursday, bringing to a close a dark chapter in the IRSs history.
In 2010 and 2011, the IRS under Lois Lerner, particularly out of the Cincinnati field office, launched what many contended were politically motivated investigations and audits of Tea Party and other conservative groups. While no criminal prosecutions ever resulted, hundreds of victims assembled in class-action lawsuits against the federal government.
Attorney General Sessions appears to have largely acknowledged the plaintiffs claims. In a DOJ press release on the settlement, he said:
[I]t is now clear that during the last Administration, the IRS began using inappropriate criteria to screen applications for 501(c) status. These criteria included names such as Tea Party, Patriots, or 9/12 or policy positions concerning government spending or taxes, education of the public to make America a better place to live, or statements criticizing how the country was being run. It is also clear these criteria disproportionately impacted conservative groups.
As a result of these criteria, the IRS transferred hundreds of applications to a specifically designated group of IRS agents for additional levels of review, questioning and delay. In many instances, the IRS then requested highly sensitive information from applicants, such as donor information, that was not needed to make a determination of tax-exempt status.
In March of last year, a unanimous three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit criticized the Obama DOJ for its handling of the case, writing, In this lawsuit the IRS has only compounded the conduct that gave rise to it.

Nah. She’s doin’ just fine. Pension intact and all.
Lois Lerner should be in jail. I’m sure not every statute of limitations has run on prosecuting her.
Sheeesh!!!
Lois Lerner should be disciplined. If she is retired she can be called back and reprimanded.....if we want that.
Sessions is giving his fellow govt pals a pass. After all, he would expect them to do the same thing for him. They aren’t subject to the laws like we are.
Yet the COMMISSAR (oops, I mean Commissioner) of the IRS, John Koskinen, REMAINS the head of the IRS. Multiple entries of the White House Logs show that he met there with (?) as the entries just show him there. If I recall correctly, previous IRS Commissioners visited the White House quite infrequently, if at all.
Lois Learner was his subordinate, and this happened on his watch. WHY IS HE STILL THERE?
Somewhat ignored here is that the whole operation was to inhibit conservative speech leading up to the election and it was very effective..
He makes the big announcement in lieu of telling us what it actually entails??
“The terms of the settlement with the conservative groups is not yet clear.”
ARE not clear, Ian.
WHO INSTRUCTED LOIS LEARNER TO OPERATE THE IRS IN THIS FASHION?
Do these people buy fish that only have a little stink down by the tail section?
This way they can support their god the Fraud’s version of a few rogue agents.
Swampy Sessions strikes AGAIN! Go back to the gay bath house Jeff.
Oh no. It wasnt about that, AT ALL.
“I hope there is a way that they can go after Lois Lerner personally. I’m sure she was operating independent of IRS policy, which should open her up to civil liability. Please dear God, let there be justice with respect to this evil woman. “
There was a thread here yesterday involving another Capo in the IRS who actually issued an e-mail directly indicating that the “policy” with respect to political organizations was different depending on which party was involved. She specifically announced a policy of going after conservatives. Both Lerner and this Capo bitch need to be prosecuted.
John Koskinen should be imprisoned at least until that smug look leaves his face.
Settled? Not settled. It should only be settled with one to the back of the heads of those involved. That is what should happen when collusion to stymie political protected speech is at stake. Not some worthless acknowledgment that something was amiss and will not happen again.
If I interpret this correctly, the groups that were injured will be compensated with my tax money, and the person who did the injuring will retire with a fat government pension. Is that about right?
Well at least they aren’t going to break up any families by putting the criminals in prison.
Yeah, the sentence sadly missing from this story is, “Lois Lerner issued a statement from federal prison about today’s settlement...”
