And then there were two: the US and Syria.
As Nicaragua signs on to the Paris Agreement, the United States and Syria are now the only two nations in the world who have refused to be members of the climate pact.
The Central American country held out on signing the deal for two years, based on criticisms that it was "insufficient" in addressing climate change. On Monday, however, the Nicaraguan government announced its intent to join the accord. Vice President and first lady Rosario Murillo said they sent a "document of adhesion" to the United Nations, according to Nicaragua's state-run media outlet El 19 Digital. "It is the only instrument we have in the world that allows us to unify intentions and efforts to face climate change and natural disasters," she said of the agreement.
The landmark pact was agreed upon by nearly 200 countries in 2015 and is dedicated to lowering emissions and strengthening countries' abilities to deal with the effects of climate change. Nicaragua was the only country to reject it at the time. Syria, plunged in a civil war, was not present at the negotiations.
US President Donald Trump announced in June that the nation would withdraw from the climate accord, a process that will be complete in 2020.
"We're getting out," he said. "And we will start to renegotiate and we'll see if there's a better deal. If we can, great. If we can't, that's fine."
The leaders of France, Italy and Germany indicated in a joint statement that the US could not unilaterally renegotiate the agreement. The UN body that facilitated the deal said it "cannot be renegotiated based on the request of a single party."
The White House reiterated last month its intention to pull out of the deal unless changes are made.

We are not sheep led to slaughter.
The “Pact” allows China to ADD as much carbon emissions as all of Europe PRODUCES currently... while the rest of the world has to reduce carbon emissions. It does nothing to help the environment, it rewards the world’s worst polluter, and was opposed by Environmentalists when it came out.
I saw the same article so you were not dreaming, or we both were. LOL
SQUIRREL!!!!
At what point in our lives does “All the cool kids are doing it” become an acceptable reason to do something stupid? That appears to be the thrust of this story.
There is good news about Syria?
An analogy of the deal...
10 neighbors get together to agree to a deal to keep the lawns nice. 9 of them agree that 1 person must be responsible for making sure everyone has a nice lawn and making sure they are mowed and groomed every week. They all agree that the 1 neighbor with the largest and nicest lawn has to be responsible for all the grass in the neighborhood at their own expense.
Can you guess which neighbor might object to the deal?
The countries set to receive the redistribution of wealth are probably complying, little good it will do them without the US to foot the bill.
Who knew Syria was so smart?
We’ll see how many of these accord “members” actually put any money on the line. China and India will resist change indefinitely I’m thinking.
Oh, wait, it is of course OUR fault - they were all prepared to make huge sacrifices if only the US would pay for those sacrifices.
Well, fine CNN. How many of the signatories are living up to their part of the contract? Any of the ones that have immediate carbon-reduction quotas?
So?
The US should just say illegal immigration causes climate change and they won’t join until the wall is 100% built.
Then step back.
Better for us
Trump is a leader, not a follower.
Lots of countries have made pervert marriage legal. It doesn’t mean that it not perversion.
And there are countries in the accord that are in it only to get free money from the USA.
So there are only 2 countries that see through the smoke and mirrors of this horrible idea? Wow.
At least we are on the correct side of that one.
