My recollection is that Manafort was the convention floor manager at a prior RNC convention that was brokered (or was in danger of becoming brokered). Maybe 1980 with Reagan vs. Bush??
In any event, there was talk before Trump clinched the nomination that convention might be brokered and Manafort was hired because of his past experience in that regard.

Now we know why Trump told Comey to investigate anyone in his campaign involved in wrong doing.
Methinks Trump knew some time ago, or was suspicious of Manafort, who improperly had filed no business registration to deal with foreign agents, and who did not disclose to Trump the extent of his connections with Russians through his business with UKRAINE.
Remember, it was only General Flynn who Trump appealed for fairness with Comey and never Paul Mannafort. Comey probably told Trump that Mannafort was fish bait, perhaps even that he was a colleague with the Podesta Group.
There is already a number of utter pointless individuals thinking they are going to be president in 2020.
If you are not a leader, please do not waste our time running for the ultimate position of leadership.
It was 1976 where Manafort was the convention floor manager for Gerald Ford, and that is why Trump hired him.
