In 2015 we voted unanimously at the NEA Representative Assembly to confront institutional racism in our schools. That means looking at the structures and processes that advantage some students and disadvantage others, especially students of color.
Those structures and processes include the harsh disciplinary practices that directly or indirectly push students out of school and into the criminal justice system. We call this the school to prison pipeline.
Were standing together to shut down the pipeline and bring an end to the unfair imposition of discipline that alienates far too many students from their own schools. NEA is building awareness, educating members and the community and taking action with NEA affiliates, members and allies.

The real problem is the single parent to prison pipeline. Bet the farm they will never address that. The disproportionate punishment of blacks is the direct result of disproportionate bad behavior.
Yet,Lilly perpetuates it.
I spent two years working as a claims rep for Social Security.
One guy who applied for retirement was a Black guy. He did not have a birth certificate so I had to check other records. One was the original form he filled out when he applied for a SSN.
One of the common records was early school records. He had gone to grammar school in Mississippi in the early 1900s. I sent off a request for his school records not really expecting much.
To my surprise they had really accurate and detailed records. This from an all Black school district in the middle of nowhere in Mississippi.
Not in California, Honey.
Yes!
1) The jails are far too cushy. Double up the inmates and rip out the TVs. Take out the libraries and gyms, and use the space for more cells.
2) The obscene "education" money isn't getting to the students. Cut teacher's salaries by at least 50% to start, and cull out about 90% of the non-educational "admin" positions.
KILL the teacher's unions and principal/superintendent associations.
3) Make sure we spend at least one dollar more on "education" than we do on prisons.
That so-called "liberal/progressive" movement intentionally diminished the role of parents and schools in teaching students about their Creator-endowed rights and responsibilities, their individual role as citizens in their communities, and the character training which once was the goal and aim of education in America
Do older readers of this thread remember when such character training was a part of the school day?
Do any now retired teachers remember when the National Education Association provided booklets and other materials based on Biblical teachings and America's founding documents in order to teach children their rights and responsibilities as good citizens?
Perhaps an examination of this web site may refresh the minds of such teachers. Or, perhaps a reading of this factual account of NEA publications may enlighten others who are younger to understand the degree to which the "progressive" control of education in America may have contributed to our current dilemma.
"Ideas have consequences." - Weaver
Thomas Sowell wrote a great piece about twenty-five years ago about how his niece got rejected to the college of her first choice and was upset.
“But, Uncle Tom (no I’m not making it up) I went to the same school you did and you were accepted by the better colleges.”
He went on to explain that the HS he graduated from in 1940 may have been the same building, but had become a shell of its former self by the time she graduated from in the ‘90’s.
In the NYC PS system back then, the ‘negro’ schools scored right there with the ‘white’ schools in district-wide scholastic competitions.
Very nice. Thank you.
It’s great what one can find on YouTube.
The NEA became a Socialist front group a long time ago. They wear a mask.
They’re not my kids.
Yes, it is time to address the problem, and it is a tough one. How to you stop youth from committing crimes? If they didn’t commit so many crimes the jails wouldn’t be full of the youth.
You might find the genesis of the problem in the statistic that over 70% of children born to blacks are to single mothers. They have no father in the home. Their family is the gang they form with other youth. Their father is the gang leader. How do you correct that problem?? It is serious. It is gigantic. Only other blacks can have any affect, but will they? Do they see the problem?? Where are the black churches? Do they see the problem??
NEA owns this.
Most who graduate are semi literate.
1) Defund and destroy the NEA 2) Stop any federal dollars that go to state run schools 3) Let it be known that any legal suits against private schools will be vigorously defended by federal lawyers 4) Call out state run schools as monopolies and encourage the use of private schools.
We have very few conservative teachers (which is why our kids are so brainwashed. Conservatives allowed liberals to take over this entire sector.) Cut the salaries that much and you won't have anyone but fresh-from-college snowflakes teaching, and they'll be replaced every 3 years by someone even younger and even dumber.
Lets jail officials of the NEA.
If you get rid of the unions and initiate merit based pay for learning results, you could have a whole different culture.
Also, teaching should also be a college credit requirement. About-to-graduate seniors could do a short stint teaching their major, before entering their profession.
There should be no “ed majors” (dumbest people on the planet)
The NEA is not about students - after all, el-hi students don't vote - nor is it about education. It is about providing cushy salaries for its members, and feeding back union dues in the way of contributions to the Dem Party.
To say we need to spend more on public education in this country is ludicrous - on a per student basis, we spend more than any other industrialized nation. And where is the return?
Which choice is racist: expelling bad minority kids who endanger others at schools with a 99% minority population, or keeping those predators where they endanger the other minority kids? I find the racism that is implicit in saying it’s okay for predators to stay in schools that are dangerous because of them disgusting.
Have you ever taught public school?
