The Regrettable Marriage of the NFL and Left-Wing Identity Politics
americanthinker.com ^ | William Sullivan

Posted on 10/23/2017 5:06:05 AM PDT by RoosterRedux

What we are witnessing in the media narrative around the NFL protests is the prevailing modus operandi of contemporary leftists seeking to introduce their identity politics into all aspects of American life, even where those politics are unwelcome for most Americans. In fact, we actually saw the left orchestrate something quite similar just a few years ago.

Consider the words of an article from 2014 by Neal Gabler, in which he argued that the NFL is the “Last sports bastion of white, male conservatives.” In it, the author cites an Experian Simmons study, noting, in clearly accusatory terms, that 83% of NFL fans were found to be white (sin of sins!), “64% were male, 51 percent were 45 years or older, only 32% made less than $60K per year,” along with the fact that “registered Republicans were 21% more likely to be NFL fans,” and finally, that “NFL fans were 59% more likely than the average American to have played a round of golf in the last year.”

The NFL, Gabler offers, is “just a place where rich old angry white men can enjoy their world on Sunday – even if that world may be crumbling around them.”

The author doesn’t hide his disdain for the NFL and its fans, whom he believed to be the political villains of the day. But why were they villains? Well, his most prominent argument centered on the “Michael Sam draft saga,” which was proof that they were all homophobes.

*snip*

Now fast forward to today, and substitute black NFL players kneeling during the National Anthem for Michael Sam, and you’ll realize that there are striking similarities in the media narrative. Only it’s not about homophobic fans these days, but racist ones. The villains, however, are the same exact people.

NFL’s contempt for its own fan base should lead it to a speedy demise now. Screw the NFL and its SJW clowns.

Leftists have long hated the NFL. Flag waving, masculine, winner takes all, American sport. They’ve been trying to decades to kill it. Protesting Redskins as an offensive mascot, saying the Super Bowl causes spousal abuse, etc.

Two years ago the weak link was revealed. Black Lives Matter folks and Social Justice Warriors co-opted the Missouri football team. The team threatened to “strike” unless the head of the university was fired for not caving into various Leftists’ student demands. Fear of losing football led to the university caving. Leftists claimed another scalp.

This set the template. The weak link? The players themselves. Turn them into Social Justice Warriors and you can get a sport that relies predominately on black players to commit suicide.

At Missouri the team is now in the cellar. Fan support collapsed and the school lost tens of millions of dollars. Attendance is down so much (30%) half a dozen student dorms were shut down. “Mission accomplished,” say the Leftists.

Now the NFL is in a tailspin. CBS is out with an article today saying the collapse in ratings has to do with bad teams and poor play. So, no reason to change course.

Nonsense. The fans are voting with their money and time - spending both elsewhere.

It was my first thought as well. I hope the NHL can capitalize on the NFL's departing fans. It is after-all, the best game you can name:

We will just form another league. They think it will break us apart? LOL, America doesn’t work like that.

Right-It puts a whole new spin on the term ‘out-of touch’

It wasn’t enough for them to watch Evita’s real time, ‘text-book’ crash and burn ...but they are determined to go down the same road.

Oh well... maybe the sky has to fall on them until they comprehend that this is a functional, capitalist, two-party system.

THIS is why they've yet to finalize the new extension of Roger Goodell's contract as NFL Commissioner to 2024. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised they are right now negotiating "golden parachute" buyout for Goodell in the US$50 million range.

Tell you what, though, the NFL sure got the feminists off their backs with this stunt. Two years ago they were bleating about football and “rape culture.” Then the players started disrespecting the flag and now the NFL are the heroes of the left and rape has vanished (because the feminists can’t put out fast enough if you hate America.)

I wouldn’t be surprised if the NoFansLeft owners not only renew this leftists contract, but offer him a raise, to boot.

These owners have lost their collective minds to even allow this to escalate to this point. Who ever imagined that disrespecting our flag and dear Vets would be a good marketing tactic??

I predict that it will - finally - really hit the fan when the value of the individual football clubs starts declining as a result of the decline in popularity. When owners begin to see the value of their franchise decline you can bet they will start to move heaven and earth to do whatever is necessary to repair the damage.

Will it be too late? Has the course already been set? These are the open questions.

Millennials don’t seem to interested in the sport. Just below the threshold more and more parents are not allowing their kids to start playing American football. Public schools, ever the on the side of the latest emerging left-wing position will begin to phase out football programs as they will claim to want to protect children, or may fear lawsuits from someone who would claim damage from “known” issues playing football. The only wildcard are the universities where football has been the golden goose.

What about this theory. Obama becomes POTUS. For his entire 8 yr tenure he makes it a point to mention his frequent, steady and enthusiastic consumption of ESPN.

ESPN is flattered and excited that the ‘hip, young president,’ (as Obama was actually described) is a fan. Starting in the first year of Obama’s term they hire more liberal minorities. The trend continues for 8 yrs.

The NFL owners and players watch ESPN. Seeing ever increasing minority liberals openly featured, they get the impression that sports fans are moving left. They go so far as to hire an ex-Obama spokesman, Joe Lockhart, as their own spokesman. The rest is history.

The argument against that view is that fully fledged liberal Goodell was hired in 2006. So perhaps the leftward drift is independent of Obama.

Just some thoughts.
