In one of his first major interviews since President Donald Trump took office, former President Jimmy Carter opened up about his views on politics and cultural clashes in the Trump era.
And although the former president said Trump was exacerbating racial tensions, Carter also repeatedly defended the current president:
He said although Trump may be contributing to the souring of America's image in the world, the declining image of America "precedes Trump."
Carter was not as bothered by Trump's relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and disagreed with his wife about the impact of Russia's meddling in the 2016 election, saying "I don't think there's any evidence that what the Russians did changed enough votes, or any votes."
Carter claimed that the "media have been harder on Trump than any other president certainly that I've known about," saying that reporters felt "free to claim that Trump is mentally deranged and everything else without hesitation."

Be looking for a "clarification" in the coming days.
And, by "clarification", I mean the exact opposite of whatever he just said.
Carter defending Trump....I don’t know if that’s good, or bad.
Only read the excerpt.
Let me guess, the declining image of America began around January of 1980?
Carter is making nice with Trump so he can go to North Korea and tell them “You can have anything you want, but that’s our final offer.”
Ever since Carter got knocked off his pedestal as worst U.S. president ever (by Obama), he’s softened his idiot stance. But he still has a few years left to reclaim the title, so I wouldn’t applaud him just yet.
I think he’s genuinely embarrassed by how deranged the left has become in this country.
Hah. I doubt it.
Not one peep out of him criticizing Obama.
He’ll be back to trashing Trump in moments.
Whoever thought Jimmy would be turn out to be fairer than George W. Bush?
Lots of the deregulation that we credit Reagan with began under Carter. He picked Volcker to wring the Johnson/Nixon inflation out of the economy. It caused a recession which cost him his job, but it worked. And he made good on his pledge to “kick (Ted Kennedy's) a..” The Democrats hated him more than we did by 1979.
Jimmah is a true old-school liberal, of the Kennedy mold - free stuff for those who need it, lots of regulations because gubbmint knows best, etc - but who also believed in a strong national defense and America First. What you might call the nationalist-liberal branch instead of the socialist-uber liberal branch ala Obama. Plus he is a genuinely nice person, and honest. His “malaise” speech didn’t help him politically, but he did tell it the way it was.
I do know that Carter has always hated Clinton.
>>so he can go to North Korea
EXACTLY! And if Trump won’t let him, will he go on his own?
This is how bad media bias and abuse of Trump has gotten - that even Jimmy Carter can see it.
With friends like this...
I think you’re right. Most everyone here has big political differences with Carter, but he’s a sane man. He recognizes that much of the Democrat party is no longer sane. Not even close to sane.
I'll flame you. Carter fully deserved the bad rap. I remember scrambling to pay bills while inflation was hiking prices of everything in sight, with Carter's blessing on it happening. He ruined everything he touched. Then there was the leftward move on politics, and his appeasement of dictators and communists. Especially his appeasement of Iran's ayatollah and the taking of American hostages in Iran. The Shah of Iran was one of our best allies in the region and Carter didn't do anything to support him, allowing the ayatollah to take power. And Carter sat idly in the White House for more than a year while our hostages were suffering, until Reagan took office.
Conservatives did indeed hate him more than Democrats in 1979. Me and my wife hated Carter and wanted him out. He was a piece of crap then, and I'll never change my view of him.
And maybe I’m mis-remembering, but it was Reagan, against wails from liberals. that allowed the interest rates to climb until inflation was choked off. Not Carter.
Now I’m worried. Carter is making a little sense.
I considered him better than Obama and LBJ, and he wasn't a pervert such as JFK or corrupt such as the Clintons.
