I am sure that being smacked (very seldom, as it has happened) did me some harm, though I am equally sure there are some people who think I should have been smacked more than I was.
But the question is whether banning smacking will do more harm than allowing it. And that is much more complicated. No person actively wants to smack a child. But a lot of sane, kind people have sometimes thought it wise to do so.......
I'm not talking about the angry and obviously damaging violence you sometimes see in supermarkets, where an exasperated and furious parent, having long ago lost control of a child, lashed out in furious, disorderly rage......
Police moan about 'lack of resources' are at last being laughed at as the self-serving propaganda that they are. Good. I have tried to make this point for years and have, as a result, been dishonestly attacked.....
The next time you hear a police spokesdrone claim they don't have the manpower, show them this chart, which proves that they did a far better job with far fewer numbers (in total and per head) in the past.....
As the numbers climbed, the service got worse.....
A disgraceful film was released this week, in which misery, pain, fear and mass murder are milked for feeble giggles.....
The Death of Stalin makes a farce out of that wholly grim and squalid event. As the monster himself lies dying, a gang of slave-drivers, secret police monsters and gruesome toadies, plus a murderous paedophile, are portrayed as a kind of Carry On farce or a Monty Python sketch.......

But it has application in our country as well.
From smacking children to a burgeoning police bureaucracy to movies that trivialize mass murder, its all here in today's column.
After about two I got the message.
I have known several adults, including myself, who were raised so violently that they are unaware of what the larger elements of society consider normal. Fortunately, my personality type was always so laid back that I seldom exceeded “normal” standards. But, others may not be so naturally laid back. Also, I was able to observe those around me and adapt, especially after I realized just how out of the norm my upbringing actually was. Therefore, what I’d recommend is similar to shoot, don’t shoot training for cops. We’d call it smack, don’t smack. Like shooting training the trainee would be trained when, where and how to punish. Also, when to stop punishing.
Having a child can be a pleasant experience or not, depending on a number of factors. But having a child who is completely undisciplined is not only unpleasant for the parents, it is worse for society and the child/adult. Liberals do kids no favors by raising them with total permissiveness.
What people don’t get about spanking a child.
A child is not an mature being, yet. It does not have the maturity to think and reason through its desires or its or its reactions. A child cannot always be reasoned with. And yet, a child must be stopped from misbehaving and, whether it understands mist things yet or not it must learn their are consequences for disobeying.
When is it no longer necessary to give a kid a swat on the fanny? When they start to respond to reason and in doing so quit misbehaving because they are told to.
Do some parents take it too far? Obviously. That is no more reason for banning spanking than it is for banning guns because a few use them irresponsibly.
My mom quit giving me a swat when I blocked it once and told he she didn’t need to do that, just tell me what she wanted. I think she was shocked by my actions and by what I said.
Spare the rod and spoil the child is the old proverb. While it rings true in general, anger must never enter the punishment decision.
After two smacks you got the message.
The message was your parents are ignorant fools.
The ignorant person has only name calling.
The ignorant person has only primitive violence.
The empty barrel makes the loudest noise.
Does this apply to NPR commentators smacking their lips close to the microphone?
Smacking is how families pass on their rage and disrespect for people. I remember seeing my brother later dealing with his father hitting him. If anybody tapped the back of his head, his proper reaction was rage.
Hitting is a poor substitute and how families pass on their unresolved rage.
Why not?
“Kiss the Son lest you perish when he has only begun to be a little angry!” Psalm 2
I think irrational anger must not enter into the punishment phase but a just rational anger itself will can enter into a just punishment!
“Be angry..but sin not” Apostle Paul
Yes, anger is where the spanking runs amiss.
You say eagleones parents are ignorant fools and your next line is only an ignorant person has name calling?
Poor old Sweden...anti smacking...being invaded by Muslims for whom smacking and beatings of women and infidels are a way of life. Sorry about your family life but most folks who received spanks in life are fairly adjusted folks who haven’t become assholes that society has to put up with!
By that same sort of logic....all guns should be taken away because some old crazy coot shoots up a bunch of citizens and all spanks should be banned because your dad was a real louse! Nope won’t buy that or support politicians or Freepers that do!
Disagree....irrational rage is where spanking runs amiss. Anger ruled by rational justice will modify punishment whether spanking or being sent to one’s room without supper. Anger motivated by justice can initiate positive change.
Yes, I meant when anger reaches irrational rage, when I said when anger runs amiss. Rage is a level of, not independent of anger. Rage comes when we allow anger to take over and short cut reason, reason to take control of anger and direct it with reason. Rage is anger run amiss. You and I do not disagree. I just didn’t explain fully what I meant.
I never got smacked. Denial is what worked. Not allowed to have my favorite things or watch my favorite TV show, grounded, not being able to go out, etc.
At the base of rage is pride out of control....the sense that one’s “wish to be like the gods” inner man has been violated and woe betide to the one who has committed such out”rage”....thus with such a “violator” shall umb”rage” be taken!
Hey what ever level of discipline works for some will be all the “rod” that would ever be needed for some folks.
I think it means if you never come down on them, they never learn to respect raw authority. And we have to learn to respect raw authority every day in life.
“... irrational rage is where spanking runs amiss...”
I totally agree. If a parent decides to swat a tushy, it should ONLY be done when the parent isn’t angry. Thus, the parent will be acting out a punishment calm headed vs lashing out when angry. I truly believe when you ask people who were hit a lot... “can you name the incident/times you were hit?” They answer “all the time”. Ask a person whose parent remained calm or waited a bit for a punishment and they usually can NAME the incident when they were hit. Case in Point: I know a kid that was hit all the time. He was hit when he got a “B” on his report card (thus “embarrassing his Father because all the other grades were “A’s”). He was hit when he accidentally skipped one line in the grass when cutting it. He was hit when his internship ended. The result is now a grown kid that has NO respect whatsoever for his Father and the Mother that allowed it. He will graduate soon and plans on moving far away.. having little contact whatsoever. He fears that if his Father hits him again (and now being grown) that he will hit him back and seriously hurt him. At some point, I know the parents will wonder why they don’t hear from their son. Hope they never ask me my opinion....
The troll has only liberal talking points.
