Weve all read the stories, heard anecdotes, and seen it spewed over the mediathat Trump voters are all the same. They all have the same motivations, right? Not really. In fact, the Trump coalitions views on economics and government are quite diverse. You notice GOP consternation about Trump bashing congressional Republicans from time to timethats not by accident. Most voters view Trump as an independent rather than the head of a major party. In fact, new polling shows that Trump is actually more popular than the GOP leadership in some key counties for the 2018 midterms. Not really a shocker to some, I knowbut it undercuts the argument that Trump is a cancer to the party. So, who are these voters that back the president?
In June, the Cato Institutes Emily Ekins found 8,000 voters to participate in the Democracy Fund Voter Survey and found that there is no such thing as one type of Trump voter. In fact, a good chunk of the Trump base is made up of economic progressives. The breakdown on Trumps coalition is broken down into five groups: free marketers, staunch conservatives, American preservationists, anti-elites, free marketers, and the disengaged; 31 percent are staunch conservatives, 25 percent are free marketers, 20 percent are American preservationists, and 19 percent are anti-elites. Five percent are described as part of the Disengaged.....

I knew who was going to win instinctively every election since Reagan. I only misread the situation one time in '92. I felt in my gut Bush was going to win. The Perot factor messed that one up.
Staunch Conservative here.
I guess I’m just a Silly American.
Being a patriot means you are an uneducated racist homophobe to the left.
This isn’t about intuitive feelings, it is about why people voted the way they did and where the support came from for the candidates. I dreaded a hillary victory, and on that Tuesday in November I was confident that Trump would carry Texas easily I did not have that same confidence for the rest of the country. When early returns that evening showed Trump performing well in some of the northeastern states that trend democrat I began to have some hope that he could pull off the upset. For the record, I voted for Trump because I had at least a semblance of a hope that his judicial appointees would be better than hillary’s would be — and an absolute confidence that they couldn’t be any worse.
If you cant see that Trump was leading a huge seismic shift in politics then you are not politically astute at all.
They are not counting us RED HEADS!!!
Largest minority in the world and not recognized.
I’m the first four.
Absolutely. I think Yeb! might have had her beaten in terms of toxicity had he (shudder) been nominated. Now there's a happy thought...
The irony is that she was desperately trying to have it both ways at once: a fiery outsider as a woman candidate breaking that glass ceiling, and the Most Qualified Candidate In History with Senatorial and Cabinet entries on her resume, however dreadful her actual performance was in those roles. She managed to blow both of them.
Trump voters: those with some brains and common sense.

I voted for Trump because he was the most Conservative candidate who had any chance of beating Hillary Clinton.
I am absolutely a free enterprise capitalist, but I'm not sure Trump is, because building a real estate empire, like Trump did, almost always requires a partnership with local government, and Trump's stimulus package is straight out of futile Left Wing Keynesian economics.
I am a Conservative on self-reliance, gun ownership, law and order, strong military, and Supreme Court judges, but I am a dove on abortion, recreational drugs, and religious faith. Although some people would call me a Libertarian, I have only voted Libertarian a few times, and only for state or local government, when the Republican candidate has no chance of winning (think Seattle and Portland, OR)
I am not anti-elite, possibly because I never think of myself as inferior to other humans, just different, with different skills and passions. Plus, the Internet gives me access to so much expert information, I feel qualified, after sufficient study, to engage anyone in a spirited debate on a broad range subjects.
I am not disengaged, but I do feel politically helpless against America's suicidal immigration policies, which appear to be supported by an unyielding majority of American voters, and also appear to be supported by a very large and very vocal minority at Free Republic.
An America preservationist? After living on the West Coast for 20 years, I no longer feel patriotic. It's impossible for me to feel kinship with so many people who completely reject my political principles. I'm not sure what the endgame is for this issue - but I am more and more sympathetic to the idea of peacefully breaking up the “United” States of America.
Read my tagline: I am ultimately unclassifiable, so stop trying.
I pretty much fall into all 5 groups.
He forgot about one substantial group; the ABC crowd: Anybody But Clinton.
By branch I meant active/reserve. By service...and I should have used the word component...I meant Army, Navy, etc. I think military service tends to result in more patriotic citizens as they age. The vast majority of those men I know who served look back on it as a positive experience.
